    CHART TIME !

    (* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

15 new entries this week, and not a single climber or non-mover.

There’s also four big fallers in the form of 911 (3 to 17), Sheryl Crow (8 to 22), Ghostface Killah (11 to 27) and Alisha’s Attic (12 to 32).

One of last week’s Top 20 new entries, Teenage Fanclub at 17 with “Ain’t ThatEnough“, has disappeared altogether.

23 Paul McCartney – The World Tonight *

The second single from Sir Paul‘s new “Flaming Pie” album, and like the lastsingle, “Young Boy” which made No.19, it’s a catchy tune, but in the currentchart climate, unlikely to go much further. “Young Boy” dropped out of theTop 40 the week after it went in at No.19.

    20 Dubstar – No More Talk * !!!

The first single from Dubstar this year, and it’s an absolute stroke of genius, with perfectly-engineered vocals in the soundmix culminating in an excellentchorus.

Last year, Dubstar had three hits, although only the first two were played toany extent on the radio. The three were “Not So Manic Now” (No.18, Jan 96),”Stars” (No.15, Mar 96), and “Elevator Song” (No.25, Aug 96).

    11 Massive Attack – Risingson *

Massive Attack last graced the Top 40 in 1995 with hits such as “Protection“,a duet with Everything But The Girl’s Tracey Thorn, and the “Karmacoma EP“.

This new track is an ambient one with a steady beat, and gets very bizarrewhen the occasional voices saying “Dream On…” appear, reminding me of”Original” by Leftfield.

    9 R. Kelly – Gotham City

After his “Space Jam” song, “I Believe I Can Fly“, R. Kelly‘s done well forhimself to get another film-song out so soon in the shape of one from thenew “Batman and Robin” summer blockbuster. This Batman song debuts in the chartjust one place higher than the Smashing Pumpkins theme for the film, “The EndIs The Beginning Is The End“.

7 Shaggy featuring Marsha – Piece of My Heart :O ===

A cover version, of sorts, of Erma Franklin‘s “(Take a Little) Piece of MyHeart” which made No.9 in 1992, I think after being used in an advert (nowthere’s a surprise). However, while Marsha sings the regular song in thebackground, that, unfortunately, seems to take second place to Shaggy’sendless gobshite for the entire length of the track.

    5 Michael Jackson – HIStory/Ghosts :O ===

Taken from Wacko Jacko’s remix album, “Blood on the Dance Floor“, this is aremix of his last album’s title track, “HIStory” which might have sounded okayas it was, but in this frenetic dance version just sounds absolutely worthless.

Although I haven’t heard “Ghosts“, no doubt it is the theme for his new40-minute short film.

    1 (NEW) Oasis – D’You Know What I Mean * *1st Week at No.1*

And so it came to pass that in the beginning of the week the single that wouldclearly sell more than any other in the week was the first new single fromOasis in more than a year.

A number of music shops around the country opened up their doors at midnighton Sunday night/Monday morning so the fans could strive to be the first onesto buy it.

Further publicity was drawn up for the band when elder brother Noel Gallaghertrumpted that Oasis were bigger than God, and “Has God ever played Knebworthrecently?”. Such a statement even warranted an item on the local Manchesternews programme, Granada Tonight, where they had a mini-debate on the subjectwith a vicar. My view? I just can’t believe anyone bothered to give Noel’sstatement the time of day.

As for the single itself, the question remains – is it any good? Well, I didn’tlike it at first, but it is a grower. The video is a simple affair of the bandplaying on a large stage while helicopters are superimposed flying around andlanding, before later becoming a physically-real part of the video.

This is now the 7th single in a row to go straight in at No.1, the list lookinglike this :

  • 1. Michael Jackson – Blood on the Dance Floor
  • 2. Gary Barlow – Love Won’t Wait
  • 3. Olive – You’re Not Alone
  • 4. Eternal featuring BeBe Winans – I Wanna Be The Only One
  • 5. Hanson – Mmmbop
  • 6. Puff Daddy & Faith Evans – I’ll Be Missing You
  • 7. Oasis – D’You Know What I Mean
