Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    8 Des’ree – Life

Des’ree once filled the charts with top songs like “Feel So High”and fairly good songs like “You Gotta Be”, but this latest offering whichhas got a very high position by her usual standards, is the most dull lifelesspiece yet, with endless chanting of the title throughout the chorus.

6 Fatboy Slim – The Rockafeller Skank *

Norman Cook in the charts under one of his many aliases and with one of hisbest songs yet.

    2 Fat Les – Vindaloo *

The real battle between the two top football songs was due to be announced thisweek when Fat Les (aka Keith Allen and Blur’s Alex James, plus someone else I’ve forgotten)’s Vindaloo and Three Lions 98 were released.

The battle was won by Bladdyblub and Skinner, but for my money Keith Allen’stune is the better one with a piss-take video of the Verve’s BittersweetSymphony, and appearances from Matt Lucas (aka The man with the scores, GeorgeDawes), Rowland Rivron and a Mick Miller lookalike.

    1 (NEW) Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds – 3 Lions 98 *1st Week at No.1*

The first one was good, but this reworking doesn’t quite work as well, particularly with the start’s high-pitched warbling of “We still believe”,down to the homage paid to two of the England team who have been ditched since, namely Gazza and Stuart Pearce.

And now there’s five weeks of the World Cup to endure. Pass the coma pills…

This is the second single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. B*witched – C’est La Vie
  • 2. Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds – 3 Lions 98

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    25. Genesis – Congo

Genesis’s first single in over four years since “Tell Me Why” just scraped inat No.40 in February 1993, “Congo” (No.29, Sept 97), is not about the realcongo, but about the divide in a relationship between two people (aah). Thesong is far from romantic and sloppy though, thankfully, and is morepop/rock-orientated with an expensive-looking video of slomo effects etc.

For those who bought the CD single, you’ll actually find the video on it, whichis a new one on me, and certainly a rarity. You’ll need a PC to play it onthough. I’ve not seen it play on a PC, so don’t know how it fares, but thelast time promo videos were included was around ten years ago when CDVs (CompactDisc Video) were around (and for anyone who has them, they are compatible withlaserdisc players than can playback PAL analogue discs).

Now Genesis are without Phil Collins, and instead with the lead singer ofScottish one-hit wonders, Stiltskin, who had a No.1 with “Inside”, the trackused in a Levi’s advert, and if memory serves me right, the first Levi’s advertto use a new song. The song itself was nothing to write home about, but had agrinding guitar riff used in the advert, which sold the record. That was in1994 though. Since then, nothing was heard of Stiltskin bar a follow-up singlelater in the year, “Footsteps” (No.34) (okay, so two-hit wonders :).

Since “Congo”, Genesis followed up with “Not About Us” which missed the Top 40altogether, although their album, “Calling All Stations”, made the Top 10.

    The end bit :

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

Otherwise, read them on uk.media.home-cinema, rec.video.releases,alt.video.laserdisc and uk.misc too!

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
