In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 16 new entries, 0 climbers, 0 non-movers & 24 downers
It’s goodbye to :
And hello to :
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
16 new entries this week, 0 climbers, 0 non-movers, and anyone can work outthat leaves 24 going down.
Big fallers include Cast (7 to 24), Finley Quaye (10 to 25),Staxx (14 to 32), and Chicane (17 to 34).
Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
22 Kylie Minogue – Some Kind of Bliss *
After the poppyness of the Stock/Aitken/Waterman years, and theslighty-weird-but-all-the-better-for-it-ness of her eponymous last album,Kylie finds herself in the charts with more of a rocky song than she’s usedto. Just a shame it hasn’t gone in higher.
Not sure what the new album is called, as the title has been changed from theoriginal proposition, “Impossible Princess”.
15 The Sundays – Summertime *
They’ve never had particularly big hits in the past, and this is their firstever Top 20 hit, their previous notables being Can’t Be Sure (45, Feb 89)and Goodbye (27, Oct 92).
One of the UK’s hidden talents produce a new single which is more of a catchyaffair, and one of those singles you’ll find yourself singing/humming along to,not realising which band is playing.
14 Sly & Robbie featuring Simply Red – Night Nurse *
One of the most successful UK bands team up with one of the most well-knownJamaican R&B acts, their biggest hit being “Boops (Here To Go)” (12, Apr 87)for probably the only single ever made about a 1980’s brand of night-timecough-curer.
Presuming that’s not what this soulful tune is about, can anyone explain whatexactly the song *is* about? Either way, it’s excellent.
13 Mark Morrison – Who’s The Mack! :O ===
Mack, Mack, Mack. What is this goofball on about?
Who’s the Mack? Who’s the wanker with the wedge-head haircut prancing abouton the sleeve of the single like a ballerina? It’s Mark Morrison, and afterhis spell in prison (again), he’s back with a single and mini-album (“OnlyGod Can Judge Me”).
Two things. Firstly it’s not going to be God that judges him, but the USjudicial system, who ought to lock him up for the many “criminal records”made so far, and secondly, this single was on sale for one week only, soperhaps their is a God after all.
Mr. Morrison. Get your hair cut. Learn to write lyrics that aren’t soself-congratulatory, and then just stop making records altogether.
8 Portishead – All Mine * !!!
Following 1995’s “Dummy” album, which brought this excellent British bandto the attention of the nation, their first two singles defined their offbeatstyle, both making No.13 with Glory Box (Jan 95) and a re-release for SourTimes (Apr 95).
This new single goes higher than the first two in a stroke, and is indescribableapart from that it’s slow, and contains sampled sound in the background makingit sound like it’s come from a scratched record, coupled with a video whichfrom what I’ve seen comprises of little more than a girl doing the singing, and you have a bizarre, radio-unfriendly, but classic tune that is Portishead.
I can’t wait for the new album to come out which will be called “Portishead”.
6 Ricky Martin – (Un, Dos, Tres) Maria :O ===
A newcomer to the UK charts, Ricky Martin brings his summer hit to Britain, but I wish he hadn’t.
2 George Michael – You Have Been Loved / Strangest Thing 97 *
Two tracks from the first-class “Older” album, and another smash-hit forGeorge. One the ballad, “You Have Been Loved”, which I read somewhere thatGeorge would have made a tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, and a moreup-tempo track, “Strangest Thing”, which was enough already, without the needfor the extra beat-track to make it “.. 97”.
It’s a rare artist who can score constant Top 3 hits from an album that’snow 18 months old, but George has managed hit, and long may it continue.
1 (NEW) Elton John – Something About The Way You Look / Candle in the Wind 1997 * *1st Week at No.1*
It was inevitable that thing song would go straight in at No.1.
For those with their head in a hole for the past two weeks, Diana, Princess ofWales and her then-beau, Dodi Al-Fayed, son of Harrodds boss, Mohammed Al-Fayed,were killed along with their driver in a horrific car crash in a Parisunderpass while being chased by French paparazzi. Who was to blame though? Thepress chasing them on motorbikes and taking photos of the dead and dying lyingin the car after the smash, or the driver allegedly going at 121 mph while overthree times the legal limit and on anti-depressants? Time will tell.
Anyway, only six weeks after the death of fashion designer Gianni Versace, where Diana was comforting Elton John, he rewrote his classic tribute to silverscreen legend Marilyn Monroe, and put it on the back of his new superb single,“Something About The Way You Look”.
Only going on sale on Saturday 13th September, this went platinum in a day, selling out within hours of all 600,000 copies released in shops, with moredue in on the Monday. This will probably be No.1 for weeks to come. I don’tthink it will stay No.1 all the way until Xmas, but it’ll climb back up to thetop to make it the Xmas No.1.
This is surprisingly only Elton John‘s second solo No.1. His first was acombination of two singles which flopped first time round. “Sacrifice / HealingHands” which made No.1 in June 90, and was his first single to be released withall the profits going to charity, with every single to come following suit.
He has had two duets go to No.1 though. “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” was No.1in July 76 with Kiki Dee, and later was redone duetting with male model Rupaul(No. 7, Feb 94). The second was with George Michael, a new version of “Don’tLet The Sun Go Down On Me” in December 91, their second collaboration, the firstbeing “Wrap Her Up” (No. 12, Dec 85).
This is the third song in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

38. Eddi Reader – Town Without Pity
The only hit single released last year from the lead singer of FairgroundAttraction, Eddi Reader’s “Town Without Pity” made No.26 in June last year. The single was superb, but dropped out of the Top 40 the following week, onlyto appear again in a beer commercial.
A certain point of interest is that she was on Saturday June 8th’s NationalLottery Live show on BBC1 doing this single and then setting the balls rolling.
Earlier that week it was stated that the lottery organisers Camelot hadprofits estmating over one million quid per week, and the boss of Camelot camein for a lot of stick about it.
Instead of saying the usual “Good luck everybody” when pressing the button,Eddi chose different words which means she’ll probably never be allowed onthe show again : “It could be you… it’s certainly Camelot !”
And at the end of the show Bob Monkhouse held up his ticket and said,”I’ve won a tenner!”, so that week his earnings for the show came to onlyUKP 15,010 then.
The end bit :
