In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.

A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
The chart is rather less volatile this week. Only 14 new entries this week,and for the first time this year the Top 3 remain the same, even if every singleone of them is cack. There’s two non-movers from Mr President (8) and the(now split-up) Rembrandts (12), and the three climbers have all gone up justone place, from Ultra Nate (now at 4), Rosie Gaines (5), andDJ Quicksilver (19)
Perhaps The Cook Report did have an effect then 😉

25 Lisa Stansfield – Never Never Gonna Give You Up *
Second single from Lisa’s current crop, and a cover of a Barry White song.Very good indeed, and like 1992’s “Time To Make You Mine”, the video featuresa clothesless Lisa. 😉
21 Del Amitri – Not Where It’s At
First single from Del Amitri since October 1995 when “Tell Her This” made No.32,and it’s definitely one worth a listen, especially for any fan of XTC as itsounds remarkably like them, although with not-so-clever lyrics.
16 Finley Quaye – Sunday Shining *
A cover of a Bob Marley song I’ve not heard, is the choice for Finley’s firstsingle. Very good. A bit weird, but very summery. Deserves to go a long way.
11 Savage Garden – I Want You
Apparently this lot are Australian, but the bloke in this band sounds just likethe bloke out of Roxette. Now you know where this record’s coming from(!)
10 Supergrass – Sun Hits The Sky * !!!
Another excellent single from Supergrass, and wins the single-of-the-weekaward. Just as pacey as “Richard III”, and with words that are more coherentthan that single 🙂
7 Az Yet – Hard To Say I’m Sorry :O ===
Jeez, what a terrible record. Another example of a classic tune, just likeEric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight”, being torn apart by a boy band. Two wordsare applicable: Vomit inducing.
1 Hanson – Mmmbop :O === *3rd Week at No.1*
I really liked it at first, and thought it was part-Sheryl Crow/part-CyndiLauper, then found out it was three brothers from America, namely Isaac, aged16 (guitar), Taylor, 13 (keyboard and vocals), and Zach, 11 (drums).
After the first week or two of hearing it, it has been played to deathENDLESSLY on every station all day, and I’m now completely sick of it.
This is now the 5th single in a row to go straight in at No.1, the list lookinglike this :

In this week’s Top 10 there’s new entries for Faith No More (Album of the Year,7), and Hanson (Middle of Nowhere, 1). The rest of the Top 10 sees a few smallclimbers, but not much activity around.
Elsewhere, the Top 40 sees new entries for Monaco (Music For Pleasure, 11),Geneva (Further, 20), Sneaker Pimps (Becoming X, 27), David Coverdale &Whitesnake (Restless Heart, 34), and Tindersticks (Curtains, 37).
Just why is it “David Coverdale & Whitesnake” when he’s part of the band??
25. Nick Heyward – Rollerblade
In 1995, one of my Top 10 records was Nick Heyward‘s comeback “The World”,but it only made No.47 in the charts. This time it’s the turn of this singlewhich was another top tune, but it only made No.37.
Still it’s better than his recent hit, “Today” which reached the dizzy heightsof No.186. Even Roger Cook and Debbie Currie scored a bigger hit than that…
