    CHART TIME !

    (* – my current favourites)
    (!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
    (:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
    ( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)

    A brief analysis on the current chart situation…

    15 new entries this week, no climbers, and three non-movers (Meredith Brooks at8, Notorious BIG at 7, and Will Smith at 1).

    Big fallers include Mary J Blige (6 to 12), Wet Wet Wet (4 to 13), Lil’ Kim(11 to 27) and Olive (14 to 28).

    Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    39 My Life Story – Duchess *

    An excellent cover version of the Stranglers track which made No.14 in 1979,but only makes No.39 for this band which can partly be attributable to thefact that it’s had zero airplay on the radio. 🙁

    31 Echobelly – The World is Flat *

    Excellent track, but I can’t remember quite how it goes as it’s another songthat’s had practically zero radio airplay.

    29 Mark Owen – I Am What I Am *

    Well, well, well. It’s been definitely third-time-UNlucky for all three membersof Take That who’ve pursued solo careers so far.

    Gary Barlow had two No.1’s, and a recent No.10 for his third single. RobbieWilliams had two No.2’s, and a No.8, but Mark Owen takes the biscuit for havingtwo No.3’s, and now a No.29, sure to bow out next week even if it’s a lot betterthan some of the songs in the Top 40. Another point of interest is that MarkOwen’s solo album, “The Green Man”, only reached No.33 in the album charts.

    One thing I keep thinking when I hear this start though, is how much thebeginning sounds like “Excuse Me Mr.” by No Doubt.

    11 OTT – All Out of Love :O ===

    A cover of the Air Supply classic, and what a dire job they’ve made of it.Last hit from them, I think, was a cover of the Osmonds“Let Me In” which wasjust as bad.

    9 Suede – Film Star

    Fifth single from the band’s current album, and fifth to go into the Top 10.Not bad, but not outstanding.

    4 Dannii – All I Wanna Do * !!!

    Dannii Minogue‘s career comes back with a vengeance to the charts, and not witha cover version for a change.

    Despite the fact that there’s a few other good songs coming into the chartthis week, I gave this one the Single-of-the-week award as it sounds like asong that’s come out of the mid-80’s, and that gets my vote.

    2 Chumbawamba – Tubthumping :O ===

    Well it may be Chumbawamba‘s biggest hit, and is getting massive airplay, butit’s partly down to that, that I’ve heard it far more times than I care to.

    The sad thing is that as Christmas draws near, and Christmas parties begin,this will be this year’s single which will be played endlessly, and I can seemyself getting seriously pissed off with it.

    By contrast, I did like their collaboration with Credit to the Nation, “Enoughis Enough” in 1993.

    A tub-thumper, by the way, is a soapbox speaker.

    1 (1) Will Smith – Men In Black *2nd Week at No.1*

    Title track from the new Barry Sonnenfeld (Addams Family 1 and 2, Get Shorty)film, and what an excellent film it is. I saw it last week and expected not toomuch, but it’s one of the few films that actually offers more than what yousee in the trailer.

    I didn’t much care for Smith’s performance in “Independence Day” as I wasn’tready for him turning that film into a comedy. He works very well in thissci-fi/comedy though, along with an excellent (as always) performance fromTommy Lee Jones, plus support from Linda Fiorentino (The Last Seduction),Vincent D’Onofrio (Private Pyle in Full Metal Jacket) playing the bad guy,and Rip Torn as Agent Z.

    As for this song, I’ll pass. It’s a standard rap affair which doesn’t havehalf the impact that “Boom! Shake the Room” had, and wouldn’t have done as wellhad it not been attached to a film.
