In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 12 new entries, 4 re-entries, 2 climbers, 1 non-movers &21 downers
It’s goodbye to :
And hello to :
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
Only a mere 12 new entries this week, but there’s 4 re-entries too.
More fast fallers this week from The Eels (9 to 25), Brownstone (12 to 29), Mary J Blige (15 to 31) and Primal Scream (8 to 38 !)
30 (NEW) Beck – Sissyneck *
Another excellent tune from Beck, but it’s a shame it was such a low entry.
28 (RE-ENTRY) Maxwell – Ascension (R) *
Last seen at No.39 in August 1996, this makes a re-entry this week. It’sgrown on me since, but I don’t think it’ll stay around longer. I hope I’mproved wrong though.
24 (26) Suggs & Co featuring Chelsea Team – Blue Day
Chelsea go up in the charts, and beat Middlesborough in the FA Cup Finallast Saturday (2-0 I think, but I’m prepared to be corrected on that 🙂
Middlesborough’s song, a version of Chris Rea’s “Let’s Dance” sung by ChrisRea (well, using the same vocal track), Bob Mortimer, and the football team, hasn’t made a dent anywhere in the Top 40, just like in the football leagueas they’ve been relegated.
23 (NEW) Hal featuring Gillian Anderson – Extremis
A one-off from the X-Files star apparently, although it doesn’t seem to bemuch more than a few spoken lines above a dance track.
21 (NEW) Duran Duran – Out of my Mind
Duran Duran‘s first appearance in the Top 40 in almost 2 years when fromtheir covers album, “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” made No.17 in June 1995.
This new track is taken from the soundtrack from “The Saint” starring ValKilmer (he turned down Batman 4 to do The Saint? Doh!!), and it’s quite agood tune, but not one to put DD back to the top of the pile again.
14 (NEW) Placebo – Bruise Pristine
I’ve only heard a bit of this. Is the singer male or female???
13 Elvis Presley – Always On My Mind (R)
Why’s this been re-released?
11 Rembrandts – I’ll Be There For You (R)
Again, why’s this been re-released? In this case, The Rembrandts have doneother songs such as the excellent “That’s Just The Way It Is Baby” but perhapstheir record company don’t know that…
4 No Mercy – Please Don’t Go :O ===
No Mercy? PLEASE DON’T! GO!!! Jeez, do we need another crap cover of this??
3 (13) Katrina and the Waves – Love Shine a Light
As predictable as day follows night, so a UK Eurovision winner shoots up thecharts. It’s quite an average song, but is getting plenty of airplay.
2 Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli – Time To Say Goodbye(Con Te Partiro)
The name of the blind tenor singing with Sarah Brightman, reminds me of theYoung Ones sketch in “Summer Holiday” when they played a game of “Botticelli”when you had to guess the name of the famous person.
Rik: “I’m A”
Vyvyan: “Andrea?”
Aah, 13 years ahead of its time…
Still, I preferred the game of “Jelly Botty” where you have to eat 18 curries!
1 Olive – You’re Not Alone (R) *2nd Week at No.1*
Bucking the trend of the singles market by staying at No.1, no doubt thissingle will appear in the end of year Top 10 now!
Previously, this single only made No.42 in September last year, and its followup“Miracle” only made No.41 in March this year. At least things are put right toa point, although with the way the charts are run now, even Eddie (The Eagle)Edwards could get a No.1 on his first week out…

Not a lot to report in the Top 10. There’s three new entries from MichaelJackson (Blood on the Dance Floor, 1), Foo Fighters (The Colour and the Shape,3), and Kenickie (At The Club, 9), while George Michael climbs back in(Older, from 14 to 10).
Elsewhere there’s new entries from Ant and Dec (The Cult of Ant and Dec, 15),3 Colours Red (Pure, 16), Silver Sun (Silver Sun, 30), Gun (0141 632 6326, 32),and Bentley Rhythm Ace (Bentley Rhythm Ace, 40).
21. Eg – Stay Home
The first of three singles released last year, along with “Turn Me On, I’m aRocket Man” and “Made My Baby Cry”, “Stay Home” was the only one I heard, butnone of them made the Top 40. There’s no justice.
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the list, just mailme at Charts Request to tell me, but please specify whether you want the music charts and/or the widescreen video and laserdisc lists.
