Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

Lenny Kravitz: California
[Baptism]

62 Lenny Kravitz – California

What happened to Lenny Kravitz? Fourteen years ago he debuted with the excellent album, “Let Love Rule”,which he said he’d spent 10 years writing. This showed as it was brimming with talent and class tunes.

His second album, “Mama Said”, was quite good as well, so must’ve included many of the offcuts that didn’tmake the first album. However, the rot started to set in when he had his first Top 10 hit, “Are YouGonna Go My Way”, and he realised he no longer had to bother putting any effort in.

Well, there was the occasional gem like “If You Can’t Say No” and “Fly Away”, but I was notsurprised when this latest piece of dull and uninspiring piece of predictable dullness was enthused uponby Radio 2’s ’00s equivalent to the ’80s-period Steve Wright, Richard Allinson. Why do people still employthat pointless, sniggering prick? (Allinson, that is)

Nelly Furtado: Forca
[Folklore]

40 Nelly Furtado – Forca

Two things.

  • 1. If this was the official anthem to Euro 2004… why didn’t they release it DURING Euro 2004?
  • 2. Is “Forca” the kind of thing English footballers should really be encouraged to do? (again)
  • Morrissey:
First of the Gang to Die
    [You Are the Quarry]

6 Morrissey – First of the Gang to Die

The second single marking his comeback, but it’s too much of a throwaway track compared to whathe used to do years ago.

    Jamelia:
See It In a Boy’s Eyes
    [Thank You]

    5 Jamelia – See It In a Boy’s Eyes

An R&B track that actually sets itself apart from all the rest and is listenable more than once,if not several times. That never happens.

    Rachel Stevens: Some Girls
    [Funky Dory]

2 Rachel Stevens – Some Girls

An appearance on Sport Relief (aka Free Plugs For Desperate Stars) gives this lacklustresingle a high placing, but it won’t do massive business for her flop album. Expect thisto plummet next week.

    Shapeshifters: Lola’s Theme

    1 Shapeshifters – Lola’s Theme *1st Week at No.1*

I don’t know where this lot have come from and I don’t really care, but they havejustifiably made one of the biggest summer dance anthems of the year. Fantastic stuff.

This is the 9th new single to go straight in at No.1 in a row:

    • 1. Usher – Yeah!
    • 2. McFly – Five Colours in Her Hair
    • 3. Eamon – Fuck It
    • 4. Frankee – FURB (Fuck You Right Back)
    • 5. Mario Winans – I Don’t Wanna Know
    • 6. Britney Spears – Everytime
    • 7. McFly – Obviously
    • 8. Usher – Burn
    • 9. Shapeshifters – Lola’s Theme
