    Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    35 Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti – You’ll Never Walk Alone

    Two surprises here. Firstly, since they only recorded this last Sunday inParis before the World Cup Final, it got a single release last week. The othersurprise is how badly it’s done. Perhaps the single-buying public’s fascinationwith opera has died down now, but the album-buying public will no doubt lap upthe whole album next month.

    28 Billie Myers – Tell Me

    Second single, following the awful “Kiss The Rain”, and is certainly better(with a promo that was apparently too hot for UK TV in its uncut form) butthe single-buying public clearly haven’t thought so.

    17 187 Lockdown – Gunman (R) *

    Re-release of the top dance tune from 187 Lockdown which made No.16 lastNovember.

    14 Ultra Nate – New Kind Of Medicine *

    Third single release from Ultra Nate and still maintaining the quality of thesingles that have gone before it. Definitely one of the better new entries inthis week’s chart.

    10 Echobeatz – Mas Que Nada :O ===

    Another dreadful remix of the classic samba track.

    8 Peter Andre – Kiss The Girl :O ===

    New song released to coincide with the remastered re-release of Disney’s“The Little Mermaid”. Give me Homer Simpson’s version of “Under The Sea”any day!

    5 Ace Of Base – Life Is A Flower :O ===

    First single from Ace Of Base since the excellent “Beautiful Life”(No.15, Jan 96), but this new track is rubbish.

    4 John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John – You’re The One That I Want (R) *

    Of a few songs released from the soundtrack in 1978, this one was the first tohit the top slot. Now the film has been re-released 20 years down the line,here it comes again.

    The good news is that this CD single comes with a track containing the videowhich can be played back on a PC with Windows 95/98, and that the soundtrackalbum has an ‘interactive’ feature.

    The bad news is that the soundtrack contains 4 snatches of videos (not the wholesong) and the quality of video is appalling, so if you’ve already got thesoundtrack on CD, don’t get the updated version. Spend the money on a widescreenvideo instead!

    1 (NEW) Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground * *1st Week at No.1*

    First single since last November’s “High Times” and their first No.1, “DeeperUnderground” is taken from the Godzilla soundtrack and is a funky, memorabletune which deserved pride of place in the film, but its only appearance wasplaying on a radio in the background while the Jimmy Page/Puff Daddy abomination”Come With Me” had the same AND was played over the end credits.

    So, is the film worth seeing? Yes. Several moments of excellent SFX, includingone or two jaw-dropping moments such as when the big G runs across the bridgenear the end, all courtesy from the “Independence Day” team. Just don’t expecttoo much character development along the line. At least this film has a numberof good one-liners from the cast including Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno,both of whom suit the film well, unlike “Independence Day” which was ruined byWill Smith‘s unfunny wisecracks.

    This is the fifth single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. B*witched – C’est La Vie
  • 2. Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds – 3 Lions 98
  • 3. Billie – Because We Want To
  • 4. Another Level – Freak Me
  • 5. Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground

    Dominator’s Top 10 of 1997

    30. Lightning Seeds – You Showed Me

    This single made No. 8 in April last year. I can’t remember who did theoriginal, but it was last covered by Salt N Pepa a few years ago. The LightningSeeds have done it much better though.

    Their other hit last year was “Sugar-Coated Iceberg” (No.12, Jan), whiletheir Xmas single, to tie in with the ‘Best Of’ album, “What You Say” wascriminally ignored making only No.41 in December.

    For their next big hit they ought to release “Waiting For Today To Happen”which accompanies the Sky One trailer for “E.R.”.

    The end bit :

    Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.

    Bye for now,

    Dominator
