A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
11 new entries and 1 re-entry this week :
After six episodes of the BBC1 comedy/drama of the same name, we get not onesingle but two. Eastenders’ Cindy Beale sings a dreadful tune, and still tocome, the character Greg is bringing out another forgettable tune.
The series was actually rather entertaining, and will no doubt be back againon TV next January.
22 Babybird – Back TogetherOnly heard this once, but I like it.
18 Steppenwolf – Born to Be WildRe-released due to the new Ford Focus ad. Like the Puma ad from 1997, in whichSteve McQueen drove a new Ford Puma, Dennis Hopper drives a Ford Focus whilehis “Easy Rider” self rides alongside the car on his bike, and shares a coffeein a cafe.
2 Corrs – Runaway * !!!Just goes to show what can be achieved when you take an excellent song andDON’T stick sodding drumbeats all over it.
1 Britney Spears – Baby One More Time *Another week, another No.1 and most people will have bought this on the strengthof the promo video which features the 17-year-old popster in a school uniform,which she gave away as a competition prize on ITV’s CD:UK a few weeks ago.
Aside from that she’s hit the big time in the US by being the youngest tohold the No.1 singles and album chart positions at the same time, somethingthat’s unlikely to happen over here given our rigged singles charts.
Not sure what her music’s like? Put it this way, she’s this year’sDebbie Gibson.
This is the 7th single to go straight in at No.1, and the 12th week in a rowthat there’s been a different no.1.

Pulp – This Is HardcoreFollowing 1997’s No.8 hit “Help the Aged” wasn’t going to be easy, but in myopinion they delivered something a million times better with “This Is Hardcore”(No.12, Mar 98), the title track to their album, and if it were by anyone elseit would bomb instantly. However, in Pulp‘s hands, this depressing slow tunestrikes a chord all of its own breaking free of the usual chart singles andmaking it a must-hear.
It was followed by “A Little Soul” (No.22, June 98) and”Party Hard” (No.29, Sept 98).
