In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 15 new entries, 0 climbers, 0 non-movers & 25 downers
It’s goodbye to :
And hello to :
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
Another week’s gone by, and the chart’s fallen apart again.
15 new entries, but after last week’s new entries, four have fallen sharply,ie. Porn Kings (17 to 34), Supergrass (10 to 29), Foxy Brown (9 to 25),and Charlatans (6 to 24). In his third week though, after falling from 4 to 15Jon Bon Jovi has gone down further to 35.
And out of last week’s 16 new entries, the one who fell out of the chart fromthe highest position was the same group who received a lifetime achievementaward at Brits 97. Yes, it’s the Bee Gees, who at the Brits had spent around3 weeks at No.5 with “Alone”. Last week they were No.14 with “I Could Not LoveYou More”. This week, in the Top 40, that single is no more…
Of the new entries this week…
21 Brand New Heavies – You Are The Universe *
Second single from their album, “Shelter”, and another catchy tune from newlead singer, Siedah Garrett. Whether it goes up any higher is doubtfuleven though it deserves it.
16 Primal Scream – Star *
Second single from Primal Scream following the Top 10 hit “Kowalski” whichI don’t recall hearing on the radio. This new track is a slow balladic effort.Well worth a listen.
9 Cast – Guiding Star *
Definitely leading the way lately for singalongable songs is Cast. They couldalmost end up type-“cast” 🙂
8 Echo And The Bunnymen – Nothing Lasts Forever *
First single in a blue moon from Ian McCulloch and the band. Slowish, downbeat, and seemingly depressing, but bloody fantastic.
If you don’t like it, then you can always write to your local MP. If you’rean anarchist and you haven’t got an MP then you can always write to the leadsinger of Echo and The Bunnymen. “Dear Mr. Echo…” 🙂
10 points to anyone who can guess what I’m referring to there 🙂
5 Blur – On Your Own
Third single from Blur‘s self-titled latest album. Not bad, but not half asgood as “Song 2” or “Beetlebum”, and not getting much airplay.
4 Ocean Colour Scene – Hundred Mile High City * !!!
They hardly seem to have been away, but it’s 8 months since OCS were in thecharts, when they made No.6 in October last year with “The Circle”.
Funky, fresh, and shouting out to make you sit up and take notice. I’ve madeit my single of the week, but the competition was very fierce from Brand NewHeavies, Primal Scream, Cast and Echo and the Bunnymen.
2 Verve – Bitter Suite Symphony *
They’ve only had moderate success in the past, but perhaps now their time hascome. Their last chart outings came in 1995 with three hits (This is Music at35, On Your Own at 25, and History at 24).
This new tune is slow but one of the most epic and atmospheric singles inthe chart at the moment.
1 (NEW) Puff Daddy & Faith Evans – I’ll Be Missing You :O === *1st Week at No.1*
Released as a tribute to the late “Notorius B.I.G.” of whom the Top 40 singleschart has heard very little apart from a recent Top 10 record after his death, this new release is nothing more than a bastardisation of the Police‘sexcellent No.1 song from 1983, “Every Breath You Take”, with lyrics alteredso that the “I’ll be watching you” part of the chorus becomes “I’ll be missingyou”. Bleah! Get rid!

26. Jamiroquai – Virtual Insanity
Almost an easy one this one. Jason Kay and his band only released two singlesas Jamiroquai, this one making No.3, and the second one, “Cosmic Girl”, comingin just before the end of the year at No.6.
Earlier in the year, they teamed up with M-Beat for “Do You Know Where You’reComing From ?” which made No.12 in June. Quite good too.
The end bit :
