In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, pickingout the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one.I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 15 new entries, 1 climbers, 1 non-movers & 24 downers
It’s goodbye to : Dunblane, Beck, Sneaker Pimps, Photek, Zee, Dodgy, DJ Kool, Spice Girls, Fountains of Wayne, Foxy Brown featuring Blackstreet, Babyface, Robin S, Peter Andre and Symposium.
And hello to : Braxtons (31), Lamb (30), Fun Lovin Criminals (28), Sean Maguire (27), Beautiful South (23), Sheryl Crow (22), Puff Daddy featuring Mase (19), Whitney Houston (16), Seal (13), Tall Paul (12), Pet Shop Boys (9), Madonna (7), B.B.E. (5), Backstreet Boys (4) and R.Kelly (2).
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
31. Braxtons – The Boss
Yes, they are the three sisters of Toni.
27. Sean Maguire – Today’s The Day :O ===
Hmmm..what to make of Sean Maguire’s records… Not a lot really, and thisone is particularly bad, sounding as if he’s trying to do a Blur.
23. Beautiful South – Blackbird on the Wire *
A slow and sombre song with Paul Heaton on vocals. Quite effective.
22. Sheryl Crow – Hard to Make a Stand
Third single from Sheryl’s self-titled album, and very average it is too.
13. Seal – Fly Like an Eagle
If I remember rightly, this one’s taken from the “Space Jam” soundtrack. Nottoo bad, but there’s not much to get excited about here. The song blends intolines from “Crazy” towards the end.
9. Pet Shop Boys – Red Letter Day * !!!
Song of the week goes to the Pet Shop Boys, with a song in which we’re allwaiting for the Red Letter Day. It starts nicely with a build up from theMoscow Choir, and then runs into typical PSB territory.
It’s been reported in today’s paper (30/3/97) that Chris Lowe isn’t looking toowell, and that recently when he was out and about with Neil Tennant, and theywere photographed, he wasn’t noticed, and only had his picture taken becausethey recognised Neil. More news as it happens…
7. Madonna – Another Suitcase in Another Hall
Third single from Maddie’s film “Evita”. Another Suitcase, another all, another Top 10 hit, and another video shown perfectly in 2.35:1
5. B.B.E. – Flash
Follow-up to B.B.E.’s “Seven Days and One Week” and in similar fashion toMadonna, another 2.35:1 video. This could catch on… 🙂
2. R.Kelly – I Believe I Can Fly
Another song taken from the soundtrack to “Space Jam”, the cartoon/filmstarring Michael Jordan, Bill Murray and Bugs Bunny.
1. Spice Girls – Mama/Who Do You Think You Are *3rd Week at No.1*
Both tracks are taken from their semi-eponymously titled album, “Spice”.
“Mama” was released to cash in on Mother’s Day (ie. March 9th this year),and “Who Do You Think You Are ?” was released as the official 1997 single forComic Relief, the video being a collaboration with Spice Girls lookalikes, theSugar Lumps, played by Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Kathy Burke, Lulu, andone other who I’ve never seen before.
This single now makes 6 in a row going straight in at No.1, with the liststanding as :

13. Tina Arena – Sorrento Moon (I Remember)
It has to be said, and surely no-one can disagree that Tina Arena put out 3of the worst singles ever in 1995 with “Chains”, “Heaven Help My Heart” anda cover of “Show Me Heaven”.
Then how refreshing to get a No.22 in August 1996 for this vastly underratedand underplayed tune to get your foot tapping and to make you singalong tothe chorus. I’m sure anyone who’s heard this will agree, but I’ve a horriblefeeling that a number of people just won’t have heard this at all…
Meanwhile, in 1997, radio stations all over the country are still playing“Chains”. AAAARRRGGGHH!
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the list, just mailme atCharts Request to tell me,but please specify whether you want the music charts and/or the widescreenvideo and laserdisc lists.
Bye for now,
