Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

28 Future Sound of London – Papua New Guinea 2001One of my favourite ambient dance tracks, I’ve yet to hear this new version.Didn’t even know it had been created.

14 Travis – Side :O ===I am so glad the single-buying public have turned their nose up at this oneand realised that the band are on the slide creatively-speaking.

It has even less to say than “Sing” did and I cannot despise it even more so.

13 Ian Brown – F.E.A.R.Another intriguing slice of indieness and one that has been used for someTV trailers, this is worthy of your attention, but even better in video formwhich is played backwards.

10 Starsailor – Alcoholic *The band follow up their haunting “Fever” with a similarly haunting track, but one that sounds far more effective in the video than on its own.

Although running for a little over three minutes, it sounds much shorter becauseit’s only a couple of verses linked together by a chorus and a solo.

6 Victoria Beckham – Not Such an Innocent Girl :O ===Dire, dire, dire. Ms Victoria Posh Beckham Spice fails to beat Kylie – andtwo other artists – in the supposed chart battle.

As for the song, it’s dreadful. She just rambles on and on about why she’snot such an innocent girl. So, she does take it up the Arsenal then.

3 Alien Ant Farm – Smooth CriminalWhile the self-proclaimed King of Pop is about to make his comeback aftersix years, this nu-metal band kick out with a perfect rock version of his 1988hit that appeared in the Moonwalker film.

With moonwalking and general Wacko Jacko pisstakes during the video it’severything you’d imagine if you thought about a frenetic rock version of thetrack.

1 Kylie Minogue – Can’t Get You Out of My Head *1st Week at No.1*

Well, so much for the Kylie vs. Posh No.1 single battle as the lattercouldn’t even manage a hit inside the Top 5 – and deservedly so.

As for Kylie, it’s okay, but that’s all. It’s a mediocre track that doesn’tinspire much in the way of positive thoughts. Yes, she may have a slinky whitedress in the video but it doesn’t sit well when you have the body of anEthopian.

Much better is the track I’ve only recently heard, even though I understandit’s a year old and comes from her last album. That track is “Your DiscoNeeds You”. Why they hell wasn’t that released over here??

This is the 13th single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. DJ Pied Piper – Do You Really Like It
  • 2. Shaggy feat. Rayvon – Angel
  • 3. Moulin Rouge – Lady Marmalade
  • 4. Hear’Say – The Way To Your Love
  • 5. Roger Sanchez – Another Chance
  • 6. Robbie Williams – Eternity / The Road to Mandalay
  • 7. Atomic Kitten – Eternal Flame
  • 8. So Solid Crew – 21 Seconds
  • 9. Five – Let’s Dance
  • 10. Blue – Too Close

Dominator’s Top 50 of 2000

39. Muse: UnintendedMaking No.20 in June last year, I described this as a haunting ballad thatcould almost bring tears to the eyes it’s that emotive, and listening to itunder the right circumstances a year later it could still do the same.Fantastic stuff.Review copyright © Dominic Robinson, 2001.
