Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

23 Starsailor – Poor Misguided FoolAn entertaining track from Starsailor, but they do tend to put out songswhich are a bit on the short side and without much depth to them.

18 Alicia Keys – A Woman’s WorthFor all the hype at some recent awards show, she puts out some bloodydull singles.

14 Pet Shop Boys – Home And DryI’d normally be the first one to say this is the absolute dog’s bollocksbecause I’ve been a massive fan of the band since their conception andbought all of their CD singles from when they started making them, up until”New York City Boy” (I couldn’t find “You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You’reDrunk” at the time)

However, this new release – the first for two years – shows that they’vecompletely run out of ideas and is very disappointing, by comparison withwhat they normally come up with.

I thought after a few listens it would have grown on me, but it hasn’t.I hope it’s not the end of the road for them.

8 Darren Hayes – InsatiableGodawful pants from the lead singer of Savage Garden. Steve Balsamo, come back, all is forgiven.

7 George Michael – Freeek! If I’m right, this is the single which soooo can’t be shown uncut onprimetime TV because of the line “one-fuck fantasy”. Either way,it’s a terribly overhyped and just plain terrible single.

George, if you’re going to hype something, make it worth its while.

6 Blue – Fly By III was sure this had been released before, but I don’t think it has uponchecking. However, if that’s the case then I must have heard it a milliontimes over the past few months and I’m sick of it already.

5 Marilyn Manson – Tainted Love *I always used to think that Marc Almond did the original of this withSoft Cell in the 80s, but later found it had been done before.

Manson’s version is most welcome and has a brilliantly gothic promo to gowith it. After the hype of George Michael’s disappointing single, it’sgood to see a track do this well without the same hype.

1 Gareth Gates – Unchained Melody :O === *1st Week at No.1*

The runner-up in Pop Idol and it didn’t sell enough to beat Will Young’s1.1 million sales in the first week, but it still sold more than Hear’Say’sdebut.

However, it’s a terrible cover version. His voice is far away from thestrength that’s needed to cover it. Practically on a par with Robson & Jerome.

For those who care, both of Will’s tracks are on here too, but sung byGareth.

This is the 6th single in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

  • 1. Aaliyah – More Than a Woman
  • 2. George Harrison – My Sweet Lord (R)
  • 3. Enrique Iglesias – Hero
  • 4. Westlife – World of Our Own
  • 5. Will Young – Anything is Possible/Evergreen
  • 6. Gareth Gates – Unchained Melody

Dominator’s Top 50 of 2001After last week’s look back at all the Top 50 tracks of last year, this week sees the list of my Top 50 of 2001. From next week I shallbegin my look back at them.

13. Ash – Burn Baby Burn

The 13th single made No.13 in April last year and was a great, loud andenergetic track with a great promo which stands up to plenty of repeatedlistens.

This track was preceeded by Shining Light (No.8, Feb 2001) and followed-upby Sometimes (No.21, July) and Candy (No.20, Oct).
