Chart catch-up from w/e April 21st 2007 to June 30th 2007…

Siobhan Donaghy:
Don’t Give It Up
[Ghosts]

W/e April 21st 2007

Catching up on the past chart weeks that I missed:

For w/e April 21st 2007, Timbaland and Nelly Furtado climbed to No.1 with Give It To Me, butI wouldn’t want ‘it’ from them. Gareth Gates entered at No.14 with Changes, but while hehas gone through many changes over the years – he no longer stammers and he’s no longer shagging Jordan -after hearing this track, while it sounded reasonable for its duration, it was instantly forgettable themoment it had ended.

Following the end of a certain TV series, David Bowie‘s Life on Mars re-entered the chartsat No.55 and then at No.72 came Siobhan Donaghy with Don’t Give It Up: The original Sugababewho escaped, Siobhan has only had one hit single before, Overrated, which made No.19 in July 2003.She’s disappeared since then but has now returned with a track that sounds very rich and textured and isan absolute pleasure to ones aural senses, with laidback tones and some reverse-sounding thing at the endof some of the lines of the song.

Beyonce & Shakira:
Beautiful Liar
[B’Day – Deluxe Edition]

W/e April 28th 2007

For w/e April 28th, Beyonce & Shakira climbed from No.5 to the top slot with Beautiful Liar, but they can’t be singing about either Tony Blair or Gordon Brown because they’re ugly as sin.

Busted’s Matt Willis attempted his comeback as a popstar with Crash as it made a mere dentin the Top 40 at No.31, while it’s been a long time since we’ve seen three groups in the Top 40, namelyOcean Colour Scene (I Told You So, No.34), Travis (closer, No.36) andHanson (Go, No.44). There were no other new entries worth the time of day, so I’ll justadd that Siobhan Donaghy climbed from 72 up to No.45.

The Wurzels & Tony Blackburn:
I Am A Cider Drinker 07
[Greatest Hits]

W/e May 5th 2007

For w/e May 5th, the big fuss seemed to be that the overhyped Arctic Monkeys apparently had chart historyby having 18 tracks in the Top 200 singles and downloads chart. This is because, presumably in addition tobuying the album online, loads of their sheep-like fans downloaded each track individually. Or, at least, they would’ve paid a fortune to download all the tracks individually as opposed to the album in one goso they were wasting their money either way. Still, some people have more money than sense.

Their single, Brianstorm, dropped from No.2 to No.7, while Beyonce and Shakira retained thetop sot.

Lostprophets insisted at No.34 that it should be 4am Forever, but that would mean that themind-numbing ITV Play would still be taking up potentially-valuable space at that time of night on ITV,while The Wurzels and Tony Blackburn brought us a 2007 version of I Am A Cider Drinker, going in at No.57 and absolutely pissing over any raucous crap that the Arctic Monkeys can conjure up.

Right Said Fred:
I’m Too Sexy 2007
[Up]

W/e May 12th 2007

For w/e May 12th, Beyonce and Shakira retained the top slot, making it their third week there, and therewasn’t much to get excited about in any of the Top 40, although if you’re a fan of the Manic StreetPreachers you’ll be glad their latest single, Your Love Alone Is Not Enough climbed fromNo.26 to No.2.

Of the new entries, Beverley Knight attempted yet another comeback with No Man’s Land atNo.43, while Right Said Fred forced their unwanted attentions on us again with a 2007 version ofI’m Too Sexy at No.56.

Scooch: Flying the Flag
[Four Sure]

W/e May 19th 2007

For w/e May 19th, McFly went to the top of the charts with their 7th No.1, Baby’s Coming Back,a cover of a Jellyfish track from way back when, but it’s not one that McFly can hold a candle to, while our Eurovision hopeful-lessScooch climbed to No.5 with the dreadful Flying the Flag. I wonder if the Russian entry, effectivelyanother tATu, will come out over here? (Oo-er!)

Sophie Ellis-Bextor:
Me and My Imagination
[Trip the Light Fantastic]

W/e May 26th 2007

For w/e May 26th, Rihanna went straight into the top slot with Umbrella, a little late for the Mayshowers, while ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena‘s first single, Real Girl, just missed the Top 10 by goingin at No.11. Elsewhere, Sophie Ellis-Bextor limped in at No.23 with Me and My Imagination. Earlierthat week she said she wouldn’t mind giving up pop for motherhood. Strange that ex-Eternal singer Louise alsosaid the same thing not long ago, and given that she’s moved on to presenting lame daytime TV shows, surely it’sa case that pop will give up on them before they give up on pop(?)

Lower down, Kaiser Chiefs, confirmed at No.61 that Everything is Average Nowadays with a track that’sas dull as they come.

Rihanna: Umbrella
[Good Girl Gone Bad]

W/e June 2nd 2007

For w/e June 2nd, Rihanna remained at No.1, and there were no newentries of note whatsoever.

The Zimmers: My Generation

W/e June 9th 2007

For w/e June 9th, there was no change at the top, and then at No.26 we saw the debut of The Zimmers witha cover of My Generation, a group of pensioners whose ages total 3000. Elsewhere, at No.74, JoshGroban brought his original of the heard-it-too-many-times You Raise Me Up to the charts.

Klaxons: Not Over Yet
[Myths of the Near Future]

W/e June 16th 2007

For w/e June 16th, again Rihanna was at No.1, while her album Good Girl Gone Bad experienced the same having gone straight in there.

Mutya Buena was No.2 for the third week running, while elsewhere saw The Klaxons at No.26 with a cover ofthe ’90s dance single by Grace, Not Over Yet

Lee Mead: Any Dream Will Do

W/e June 23rd 2007

For w/e June 23rd, Rihanna made it her fifth week at the top, while Marillion revisited the Top 20for the first time in what feels like forever with Thankyou Whoever You Are at No.15, while for some reason,Enrique Iglesias forgot about his ‘ping pong’ when the oldie (no, not his Dad), Hero, revisited at No.74.

Cheesyness is abound as the new ‘Joseph’, Lee Mead, went in at No.18 with his cover of Any Dream Will Do,and if it’s anything like I heard it on TV the other day, the backing music is precisely the same version as JasonDonovan’s 1990-style dirge.

Paul McCartney:
Dance Tonight
[Memory Almost Full]

W/e June 30th 2007

For w/e June 30th, it was a 6th week at the top for Rihanna, while Lee Mead shot up to No.2, andthere was a similarly-impressive climb for EditorsSmokers Outside The Hospital Doors, which leaptfrom No.30 to No.7.

New entries include Take That at No.17 with I’d Wait For Life, Muse at No.18 with Map Of TheProblematique, Gareth Gates at No.22 with Angel on my Shoulder and Ash‘s Polarisat No.32.

Paul McCartney brought the ukelele back to the Top 40 with the lacklustre Dance Tonght (No.34), andit’s not looking good for Mel C‘s comeback as the predictable Carolyna limped in at No.49.
