Nina places Zoe Saldana (Star Trek: Into Darkness) in the titular role, telling the story of the late jazz musician and classical pianist Nina Simone, showing her rise and fall and rise again, plus her relationship with manager Clifton Henderson (Selma‘s David Oyelowo).
With her career lasting mostly through the 1960s, her best-known songs are I Put a Spell on You, Ain’t Got No, I Got Life, To Love Somebody, I Put A Spell On You, My Baby Just Cares for Me and Feeling Good.
While her key career span was before my time, my late father was a huge fan of hers, and even went to see her perform, as he told when he appeared on Channel 4’s Countdown in 2009.
Nina is written and directed by Cynthia Mort, in her first feature-length directorial debut, and doesn’t yet have a UK or US release date, but I do want to check this out, although it hasn’t gone down well with the late singer’s estate.
