Now You See Me 3: Now You Don’t… I’ve put the ‘3’ in, because SEO (search engine optimisation) favours titles that have no more than five words (the ‘3’ counts as a word), hates punctuation and hasn’t got clue what to do with the apostrophe, since that can’t be included in the URL, so it thinks the title doesn’t match the URL.
For fuck’s sake, Hollywood, if you were going to stick “Now You Don’t” in the title, anyway, you’d have done it with the second film. And we’re now 9 years on from that, so you REALLY must’ve run out of ideas in 2025.
Fair play to Jesse Eisenberg – as the stupidly-named J. Daniel Atlas – he pulled an absolute blinder earier this year, with A Real Pain, but for every up, there’s a down, and he’s back wasting two hours we’ll never get back with this dross. As are the others.
Woody Harrelson (Last Breath) returns as Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco (Together) returns as Dave Franco, and Isla Fisher (Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy) returns as Isla Fisher, completely ignoring the fact what wasn’t in Now You See Me 2. Her spot was taken by Lizzy Caplan as Lula… Hmm… where did she go for the last 9 years? Can’t remember a film I last saw her in (checks)… Netflix’s Zero Day. That was good. But little else since the last film.
I love magic tricks, and it blows me away when I see someone shove a penny through a table. I know the penny’s only in their ‘receiving hand’ all along, but it’s the effect it gives. But…. these films are NOT magic tricks. They’re just endless, dull CGI, and centred around petty theft.. or larger scale theft in the ‘Robin Hood’ situation of redistributing the ill-gotten wealth of crypto chap Brett Finnigan (Andrew Santino – Ricky Stanicky) early on. Still, he has a goatee, so he deserves everything he gets.
However, the main task for the ever-growing ‘four’ Horsemen is to steal a fancy big expensive diamond from Veronika Vanderberg, and bring her down. But, she shouldn’t be taken down for being a dodgy sort, but because Rosamund Pike (Hallow Road) is displaying the most dogshit foreign accent I’ve EVER heard in my life. It’s meant to be South African, but I’m sure VV’s origin keeps shifting countries from one scene to the next!
Now You See Me 3: Now You Don’t also adds to the magicians roster by throwing in a trio of thieves who are introduced with the early crypto-based scene, June (Ariana Greenblatt – Borderlands), Bosco (Dominic Sessa) and Charlie (Justice Smith – Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves). There’s also more people to come later, to overstuff the cast list some more. Those names, I’ll put behind a spoiler in the cast list below, in case you want to be surprised about those, as they weren’t in the trailer.
Elsewhere, one escape sees a character getting out of a glass tank by using their diamond to cut against its wall, but they wait until the very last second, when they’re almost drowned before they try this… they could’ve done it at least 10 minutes earlier!
Still, maybe their big trick was getting this shit greenlit!
In this world, it takes two seconds to easily pose as a famous photographer by donning a fake beard, not only with the intention of stealing a diamond, but for all Vanderberg’s team know, they could’ve had explosives attached to their body and killed everyone. Security is not the strong point of movie security guards.
And one particularly stupid aspect of the final segment…
Dreadful film. Dreadful script. Dreadful acting. Deserves a dreadful score.
But I’ll give Ariana Greenblatt 1 😉
NOTE: There’s no mid- or post-credits scenes, but the film’s epilogue is clearly the sort of thing that would be intended as a post-credit scene, although I expect the studio didn’t want people to miss it.
Now You See Me 3: Now You Don’t is in cinemas now, and is available to buy on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD.
