Eidos Interactive Ltd., creators of some of the world’s leading videogame properties, has today confirmed that Gauntlet™, amodern reworking of the classic fantasy hack and slash arcade game from Midway, will be released on Nintendo DS this October.

Gauntlet is set in a fantasy-themed universe where evil cloaks the world from the high clouds of Ascendia to the depths ofthe lava-ridden Abyss. Players can choose from the four classic heroes, Elf, Warrior, Wizard, and Valkyrie, each with theirown strengths, weaknesses and special abilities. Throughout the journey, the heroes will slash their way through demonic foesand gain up to four power move abilities to aid them in their battle with evil.

One of the few titles taking full advantage of the hardware capabilities of the Nintendo DS™, Gauntlet offers Voiceover IP(VoIP) which allows voice communication through the Nintendo DS microphone, giving players more options to interact with theirfriends online.

Featuring 40 maps across three realms, Gauntlet offers fast-paced, retro RPG crusade-style gameplay in addition to new andin-depth multiplayer features including cooperative play and competitive multiplayer. The arcade style competitivemultiplayer feature strengthens the addictive Gauntlet experience by introducing ranked multiplayer games like – Deathmatch,Team Deathmatch and Treasure Hoard game modes, hosted with local Nintendo Wireless play or via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

Developed by Backbone Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment, Gauntlet is set for release on Nintendo DSlater this year.

Game features:

  • Story Mode Campaign – The Hero, alone or with up to 3 comrades, travels through 40 maps across 3 realms.
  • Playable Characters – The player has a choice of the 4 classic character classes, each with individual strengths and weaknesses and an exclusive set of 4 Power Moves – exclusive to the DS version.
  • Communication – During Wi-Fi multiplayer gaming you can communicate through the DS microphone with your fellow gamers, a first for a DS game.
  • Fully 3D Worlds – Displayed on the entirety of both DS screens: again, a first for a DS title.
  • New Puzzles and Attacks – Fast-paced melee and ranged combat combined with traps and puzzles keep frenzied action balanced.
  • Multiplayer – In addition to Cooperative play in Story Mode, players can select from one of 15 unique multiplayer maps, including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch andTreasure Horde.

Wi-Fi multiplayer features:

  • Strangers / Friends / Rivals – Games can be played among Strangers as well as with Friends and Rivals. Friends and Rivals have access to more multiplayer features than Strangers.
  • Game Filters – Players can search for games that suit their tastes and play styles filtering by game mode, competitor type, location, and skill level.
  • Friend/Rival Scheduling – Players can set a game mode, date and time and post their selection onto a list to be viewed by their Friends and Rivals. This improves the ability for players to find others online.
  • Ranks – Players can see how they rank against others by viewing the ranking screens of the Top 10 players in addition to the 10 players ranked closest to them. These screens are available for viewing on the DS as well as on the internet.

Gauntlet retails for £19.99 and is released on Nintendo DS on October 31st 2008.
