“A penetrating eye-opener of a documentary” – Hollywood Reporter
“…a powerful documentary that uncovers half-forgotten history..” – Los Angeles Times
“These GIs rocked America to its core…84 engrossing minutes…” – The Times

The second in Stoney Road Films’ series of releases revealing hidden aspects of the Vietnam War will be available shortly. After “Winter Soldier” with its succession of veterans confessing to atrocities, comes “Sir! No Sir!” documenting the extent of the near mutiny in the American armed forces that was the GI Movement to end the war in Vietnam. It captures the urgency, immediacy and fear of one of the most vibrant and widespread upheavals of the 1960’s – one that had a profound impact on American society yet, until this documentary, had been virtually obliterated from the collective memory of that time.

Directed by David Zeiger, who, when 19, dropped out of college to take part in supporting and organising the movement, and has since directed a number of documentaries of note, this hidden history combines fast-paced archival footage with thoughtful interviews that has strong resonances for this era of dubious wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The film shows us the underground newspapers that sprang up at military bases to air the discontent of the troops, the coffee houses that were started outside the bases to give them a place to share their feelings (including the Oleo Strut in Killeen, Texas, which Zeiger helped found), the protest demonstrations, leafleting, refusals of service and “incidents of desertion” (which saw many tried and gaoled), even the killings of officers by “fragging” (killed by fragmentation grenades by their own men), the repressive responses of the military establishment and the agitprop show mounted and performed in by Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland “FTA”, which is the subject of our next release “FTA” (“F… The Army”) Many of the key participants in events of the time feature in the movie. With extras.

“Sir! No Sir!” won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2005 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, the Jury Award for Best Documentary at the 2005 Hamptons Film Festival and was nominated for Best Documentary at the 2005 Independent Spirit Awards.

The DVD is out on February 2nd, it runs for 85 mins and retails for £14.99 on DVD,but is currently on Amazon at the link above for £9.98.
