Network will release the pitch black sitcom IN LOVING MEMORY – THE COMPLETE FIRST SERIES (PG) on DVD on 2nd March 2009. This is the first time that this popular series is released in any format.

The place is Oldshaw and the year is 1929. A fictional little town in Lancashire, it has its own theatre, cafes and taverns. This is where Jeremiah Unsworth and Co., the undertaker office can be found. Thanks to the hapless widow of old Jeremiah and his gormless nephew Billy, Oldshaw is also where the most disastrous funerals can be arranged and experienced. The show opens with the death of the proprietor of the funeral home, Jeremiah Unsworth. Alas he is unlamented and his will brings much unease to his widow Ivy and his nephew Billy, as the responsibility of keeping the funeral home up and running has now fallen onto their incompetent and accident-prone shoulders…

Legendary comic actress Thora Hird (Last of the Summer Wine) brings her inimitable humour to the role of Ivy Unsworth in this much-loved comedy series; she is ably supported by Christopher Beeny (Upstairs Downstairs). IN LOVING MEMORY was a huge success for Yorkshire Television and ran for five series between 1979 and 1986; this Complete First Series also features appearances from Richard Wilson (One Foot in the Grave) and Joan Sims (As Time Goes By).

Episode listing:

  • LEGACY: The funeral parlour is “Closed – due to bereavement”. The reading of the late and unlamented Jeremiah Unsworth’s will brings little comfort to Ivy – and even less for Billy
  • GONE DANCING: Billy Henshaw sees the girl of his dreams during Carnival Night at the Temperance Hall Tearooms. But the trouble with being an undertaker, as Billy complains, is that “it puts the jessies right off you”…
  • THE RIVALS: Competition rears its ugly head as Ivy Unsworth becomes embroiled in a bitter Trade War with Percy Openshaw (of Openshaw’s Funeral Emporium). The winner takes it all – and the loser catches the next hearse out of town
  • PORK: Following an unfortunate incident with a short-sighted pallbearer and a professional mourner with a permanent grin, Billy Henshaw is given the opportunity of a lifetime and a chance to learn a new trade…
  • COME BACK LITTLE MALCOLM: One of the advantages of being an undertaker is that it’s the only profession in which the customer can’t complain or come back for a refund. But at Unsworth’s funeral parlour, it seems there’s a first time for everything…
  • ONION: A string of onions and a bicycle wheel stuck in the tram-lines set Billy on the road to High Adventure – via a trip to France in the hearse…

The DVD is out on March 2nd, it runs for 175 mins and retails for £14.99 on DVD,but is currently on Amazon at the link above for £9.98.
