THE 10 YEAR WAR THAT SHOCKED AUSTRALIA
Based on the real events of the 1995-2004 gangland war in Melbourne, UNDERBELLY is a brutally honest 13 part dramatization of the infamous killings and the rise and fall of the king of the underworld, Carl Williams.
This intense, dark and slightly humorous Australian drama could easily be referred to as The Sopranos meets Chopper, jammed-packed with gangsters, sex, drugs and gang warfare. UNDERBELLY is currently showing on FX and is released on DVD in the UK by Contender Home Entertainment on 9 February 2009 the week after the last episode airs.
As one of Australias ratings-winning TV dramas and biggest selling DVDs, the highly controversial UNDERBELLY is still banned in certain parts of the country. It supplies magnificent and sinister performances from the entire cast, including; Vince Colosimo (Chopper), Frankie J Holden (Clubland), Les Hill (Home and Away) and Jane Harber (Neighbours). If you like The Sopranos, crime and gangster flicks then you will love UNDERBELLY. It ticks all of the relevant boxes, and delivers an exquisite and intense viewing from start to finish.
UNDERBELLY follows the true story of The Carlton Crew a syndicate of gangsters who dominated the Melbourne underworld. They kept a low profile but but knew how to mix in good society and how to keep firm control on the power they had. This 13 part mini-series examines the nature of loyalty, love, blood feud, passion, pride and revenge.
During this time a new and highly lucrative amphetamine market exploded around the party scene. Carl Williams and his crew were the principal makers and suppliers. Then along with the taste for the sudden wealth came a desire for status and power! All of the major players were married, had kids, all dressed well and invested in clean and stylish enterprises. They kept everything going smooth for a while, but that couldnt last.
Before long, after a police raid, a pill press was impounded which was the fuse that lit the Melbourne Gangland Wars. These wars escalated and saw the deaths of 33 people in the time between 1995 and 2004. The police then established the special Task Force Purena to show the underworld who was running the city. This proved incredibly difficult as absolutely no one was willing to say anything against the crew through fear!
The DVD is out on February 9th 2009, it runs for 556 mins and retails for £39.99 on DVD,but is currently on Amazon at the link above for £25.98.
