From Academy Award® nominated director Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), and starring BAFTA® nominated actress Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), Miral comes to DVD on 4 April 2011 from Pathé Productions Ltd. Based on the autobiographical novel by Rula Jebreal, Miral tells the story of a smart and spirited young Palestinian girl as she tries to find her way in a troubled Jerusalem in the 1980s.

Jerusalem, 1948: On her way to work Hind Husseini (Hiam Abbass; Munich) comes across 55 orphaned children in the street. Horrified that these small children could be left to fend for themselves, Hind takes them home and gives them food and shelter. Within six months, 55 became 2,000 and the Dar Al-Tifel Institute was born.

At age 7, Miral is sent to the Institute by her father following her mother’s death, where she grows up sheltered from the growing tensions of the outside world. At 17, Miral emerges into the world a young woman with hopes and dreams, only to discover how naïve she has been to the troubles that surround her.

As Miral takes the first steps into adulthood she quickly becomes politicised amid the tensions of 1987 and the flourishes of first love with activist Hani (Omar Metwally; Rendition). However, Miral has a tough decision to make; should she follow her heart and fight, or listen to the wise words of Mama Hind that education is the real road to peace.

Miral is a courageous and groundbreaking film that dares to tackle post-war Middle Eastern history from the point of view of Palestinian women – a must-see on DVD this April.
