Based on the true story of Captain Ernest Gordon, a Scottish soldier takenprisoner by the Japanese at the height of World War II, To End All Wars is awar drama that explores man?s deepest struggle for freedom in the face ofinhumanity and despair. Starring Robert Carlyle (The 51st State, The Beach,The Full Monty), Kiefer Sutherland (TV?s 24, Phone Booth) and Ciaran McMenamin(Bollywood Queen) in the role of Captain Gordon, Partner Entertainment arereleasing this fantastically moving, thought-provoking and hard-hitting filmfor the first time to buy on 6th October 2003.
When Gordon’s regiment, the elite 2nd battalion Argyll and SutherlandHighlanders are forced to build the infamous Railroad of Death, the prisonersare pushed beyond endurance and against each other. Major Ian Campbell’s(Carlyle) defiant plans to escape and Lieutenant Tom “Yanker” Rigden’s(Sutherland) code of self-preservation soon run into conflict with the valuesof dignity and self sacrifice shown by Gordon and POW Dusty Miller (MarkStrong, Its all about Love.) As the tension between the prisoners increases,we discover that despite the atrocities of life in the camp, the most dangerouswar is the one fought within.
Gordon, who passed away at his New Jersey home in January 2002, recounted hisexperiences in a book of the same name, published in 1963. This remarkablestory of a Scottish POW, who was forced to work on the bridge over the RiverKwai, was made into a Hollywood film in 2000. Born in Greenock, Gordon forgavehis captors and went to Japan many times to take part in formal acts offorgiveness.
