Saw X was techncially part of a double-bill, which I saw alongside Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie – although to be more accurate, part of five films, also adding in The Old Oak, The Creator and The Exorcist Director’s Cut…
I’ve only seen Jigsaw before, and I learned this latest entry was actually set between Saw and Saw II, which will explain certain characters being present, such as lead protagonist John Kramer (Tobin Bell), who should be dead, but in this timeline, he’s alive… almost. An MRI scan is required, because he has an advanced brain cancer, giving him just mere months to live, to which he responds that he still has a lot of work to do. He’s certainly very polite for a mass murderer!
Following a chat with fellow sufferers, a possible cure comes about, in the form of Cecilia Pederson (Synnøve Macody Lund – Headhunters), whose clinic will be able to make everything all sunshine and rainbows again, but for a hefty fee.
For the next section, I’ll discuss certain plot elements which are in the trailer, but in case you’re avoiding that, then avoid this, also:
And for one of those being tested (this is NOT in the trailer):
However, as an example of a situation that’s not key to the plot, a thief tries to steal John’s watch, causing him to imagine the man being sat in a trap where five fingers are wired up to a machine, and where they’ll all be broken, or his sight will be stolen… which is the device in the main poster. I could quibble that the device doesn’t actually cross over, but that’s for the X in the poster.
In fact, for some of those who ARE tested, trying to escape is like a sick version of The Adventure Game, and quite frankly, this is what Big Brother should be like!
Saw X has brilliant acting, directing and writing and I absolutely loved it, even if it was quite gross at times, with very inventive games. I also understand, that as this film is set almost 20 years ago, the studio planned to use de-aging tech for Tobin Bell, but I’m glad they didn’t. While it was useful for The Irishman, the studio felt that for this film, it would’ve been distracting for the viewer. In my opinion, it wasn’t necessary anyway.
Now, how about we get Tobin Bell meeting himself next time, for Saw 11: Kramer Vs Kramer?
There’s also a mid-credits scene as described in the video below.
Saw X is in cinemas now, and is available to pre-order on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD.
