The 3 Tenors Christmas, breaks with tradition for Carreras, Domingo and Pavarottias they normally only grace us with their presence when there’s a world cupon, but here they perform an extra concert, recorded at Vienna’s Konzerthaus.

Given the Xmas theme, that’s all you get here with such traditionals asWhite Christmas, Let it Snow, O Tannenbaum, Jingle Bells, Amazing Grace,Silent Night and a tune Pavarotti wrote with Vittorio Benvenuti,Ave Maria, dolce Maria.

The concert closes with Lennon’s Happy Christmas (War is Over).

I have since found out that the content on this DVD was shot in 16:9 andso is cropped to 4:3 for this release, since the BBC showed it in widescreenformat. Hence, I shall be marking the score down.Quality-wise, the picture looks like a fairly decent NTSC conversion, butisn’t quite as sharp as it could be. Artifacts are few and far between. The average bitrate is 6.68Mb/s, occasionally peaking over 9Mb/s.

The sound works well with a full soundstage, even better in Dolby Digital 5.1,although a standard PCM Stereo option is available.

Extras :These are rather pointless. The Selected Discography shows the coversfrom a number of Sony CDs featuring one, two or more of the artists on display, except barely any Pavarotti, while the Artists’ Biographies allows twopages of large text per singer.

All the songs are sung in their native languages, with no subtitlessurprisingly. The menus have some subtle animation and music over them.

Fans of the trio will no doubt look into this disc, but as most of it willbe screened in a TV special on Saturday December 16th on BBC2 at 9pm, plus the factthat you won’t play it many times after the festive period is over, is itworth £19.99?
