The Revenge Club is one of those dramas which starts with a ‘present day’ scene, then goes back to show everything that happened, as Emily Hunter (Aimee-Ffion Edwards – Mr Burton) is being interviewed by police, it’s all hit the fan and she tells them that “Nobody was supposed to get hurt”.
Husband Dan’s (Wil Coban) been having it away with her best friend, Charlotte (Christina Bennington – Queens of Mystery), meaning she’s been replaced out of her house and home, and headed for the Divorce Support Circle run by Malcolm (Amit Shah – Murder Before Evensong).
It’s not quite the 1-2-1 Club, but before you can say “Dear John“, I was wondering how How does Emily hold back from knocking both of the funsters into next week?!
Still, since karma can’t be relied upon to get them back, what about revenge? Hence, the title, of course.
As one of those dramas which dripfeeds the information to the viewer as and when required, The Revenge Club is all a bit daft, like BBC1’s Hustle from the 2000s, as if everyone in the club can suddenly gang together like experts at hoodwinking people who deserve it. And without saying who’s first and what happens, it all rather felt like the gang just wound the culprits up a bit, rather than actually took revenge.
However, when one character infiltrates a particular building, and uses the printer, they’re trying to be all clandestine, but I noticed that they didn’t log out of the machine, so for what they’re printing, others will still be able to see it!
Meanwhile, another person leaves their laptop in a restaurant, leaving it out of sight as they go out to talk to someone. I wouldn’t leave anything like that unattended! But… mere details 😉
So, while it’s all incredibly silly, it’s not quite Channel 5 four-parter levels of silly. Still, it’s a decent cast, including Line of Duty‘s Martin Compston, and the more Aimee-Ffion Edwards scowls, the hotter she gets 😉
The episodes are rated an advisory 18, but I’ve say it’s more a 15-cert. The BBFC doesn’t yet list the show on their site.
Thanks to our friends at Paramount+ for the screener prior to release.
