Trigger Point sees Vicky McClure in a new cop drama – following six seasons of Line of Duty, along with Adrian Lester as Terry Nutkins…, sorry, Joel Nutkins. I’m a child of the ’80s, I can’t think of any other Nutkins. Okay, maybe Squirrel Nutkin, although that was long before my time.
If I learned anything from Lethal Weapon 3, it’s that the bomb squad never turn up on time. Almost 30 years on, can Kate Fleming… sorry, Lana Washington change all that?
As they head into the tower block for their first call this series, I won’t say where the bomb is, but if you’ve seen Lethal Weapon 2, you’ll have an idea. Plus, one character even says, “I’m getting too old for this shit”, so someone’s been doing their homework on that franchise!
There’s some background to the main characters, including ex-Army man Joel – who once completed a tour of Afghanistan – lives with his partner, Jazz, but into the job itself and there’s a lot involved in disarming a bomb, plus when one of the team potentially makes a misstep and has to keep everything still, they’re clearly going to have a stiff arm in the morning!
Trigger Point gives us an engaging first hour, although since everyone calls each other ‘mate’, just like in Line of Duty, is it something ALL cops do?
As an aside, when the team first go into the tower block, checking room by room, and each shouting “Room clear!” several times, but why does no-one ever check in the cupboards? That wasn’t an issue as it turned out, but just an observation.
Oh, and I know audio sound effects are added in post-production, but in the opening scene, as the team climb a tower block set of steps, instead of sounding like a set of steps, they sound echoey and metal, like something out of Half Life 2!
