65 isn’t about the retirement age for pensioners, but the approximate number of mega-annums since the dinosaurs first ruled the Earth, before an asteroid allegedly struck the planet and wiped them out, but those records are spotty, at best.
We begin on the sparsely-populated planet, known as Somaris where, conveniently, they speak English, speak with modern parlance, and have mixed race relationships back then, so they’re very 2023!
Alas, for Mills (Adam Driver – The Man Who Killed Don Quixote), and his wife, played by Nika King, their daughter, Nevine (Chloe Coleman), is unwell, and of course, the only answer is to head off in search of a cure, which involves interplanetary travel, resulting in crash-landing on Earth, the only other survivor of the ship being a young girl, Koa (Ariana Greenblatt – Avengers: Infinity War), an ultimately, travelling to get to a far-of part of the ship, find an escape pod and return home, but as mentioned, since it’s the time of dinosaurs – and with the asteroid due any time soon, it’s time to bail…
So, in 65, we have a combination of a road trip and a monster movie.
65 is a very brief 93 minutes, in the time it takes Mills and Koa to get from A to B, and hopefully get off the Earth and away from their new Jurassic friends (okay, 85 minutes, plus end credits), but in seeing the pair bond – given that Mills is missing his daughter back on his home planet – he feels a fatherly connection with Koa, and it’s like when I played The Last Of Us, and the bond Joel eventually formed with Ellie… and, yes, the game. The TV series lost that completely. In fact… Mills and Koa make a far better ‘Joel and Ellie’-style pairing!
As such, I wanted to spend more time seeing them chat and fight dinosaurs, and I think another 20 minutes would’ve been just right. 85 just seems way too short for any sci-fi drama.
65 is in cinemas now, and is available to pre-order on 4K Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Amazon Prime and DVD.
