Class Of 07 – The DVDfever Review – Amazon Prime Video – Emily Browning, Caitlin Stasey

Class of 07

Class Of 07 is about a high school reunion, as you’d expect, but everyone has their different backgrounds as to what they’ve been up to, and for Zoe (Emily Browning), she inadvertently showed herself up on The Match – clearly a pastiche of The Batchelor – where she’s not chosen, and doesn’t take it too well. Plus, in the world of social media, it goes even worse for her, soon after…

But soon, she’ll have knowledge, as she witnesses the ground exploding with water bursting out, so something is seriously afoot.

Still, despite being the most infamous person on Youtube by this point, she turns up at the ‘Class Of 07’ reunion – taking place ten years after they left school – where the party is in full swing, but they think she’s rather off on one when she tries to explain that the Earth is cracking up, whilst maintaining that her exit on The Match was down to a ‘bad edit’.

Saskia (Caitlin Stasey) helps calm her down, but as Sandy (Sarah Krndija) films Zoe on her phone as she storms off to the bathroom, she comments: “Oh, I’d love a sequel(!)”
Former school captain Saskia retorts: “What’s wrong with you? Put your phone away. She’s clearly unwell”
Sandy: “Okay, Sas(!) Like you wouldn’t have been all over that shit at school.”
Saskia: “Well, I was a cunt in high school, Sandy. Some of us grow out of it(!)”

Just a slight problem to come… Zoe was right, and everywhere is flooded beyond belief, and someone’s going to get wet feet, if not a wet leg.

Before long, they try to look for help, such as writing ‘HELP’ on the grass in flammable letters, and using a generator to conect the outside world. However, despite their predicament, some of them are too busy dredging up 10-year-old arguments from when they were at school together.

I’ve seen two episodes, and while it’s a bit daft at times, overall, Class of 07 feels like an interesting idea – and obviously based on Lord of the Flies, but the cast are a mixed bag, and overall, this isn’t really working for me. I’ll check out the reaction to this, however, to see whether it’s worth diving back in (water pun, not intended)

Either way, it does have some great music, such as Vampire Weekend – Cousins, The xx – VCR, Gossip – Heavy Cross and Gwen Stefani – The Sweet Escape.

And if you’re wondering where you’ve seen Caitlin Stasey before, not only was she Rachel Kinski in Neighbours, but more recently, she played the character of Laura Weaver in the horror thriller Smile, in the opening scene. And if you’ve seen it, you know how powerful that segment was. It was also a decent film, to boot.

Thanks to our friends at Prime Video for the screener prior to release.
