About Ray tells the story with Elle Fanning as young teenager Ramona, feeling like a boy trapped in a girl’s body and looking to have gender reassignment surgery to become a young male named Ray.
Unfortunately, in a film which also stars Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon and the always useless Tate Donovan, Hollywood seems incapable of making a film about transgender issues without having all the key players crying a lot, looking all anguished and heart-wrenched, and also talking in cliches, whilst plinky-plonky piano-based music plays in the background. One day they will make a film which doesn’t degenerate into mawkish over-sentimentality. Today is not that day.
And if they’re going to make such a film, how about using REAL transgender actors rather than filling the screen with Oscar-nominated and/or winners just because they’ll think that’s what puts bums on seats in the cinema? After all, someone at 20th Century Fox thought they knew what would draw people to a Fantastic Four reboot…
About Ray is released in the US on September 18th, but hasn’t yet got a UK date. When it does, don’t bother.
