Bang Bang Baby is a new Amazon Prime 10-part series where five episodes are available from this coming Thursday, with the remaining five due on May 19th.
Set in 1986, it centres around Alice (Arianna Becheroni), a teenage girl with a love of bubble gum, who wishes she could emulate her TV heroine, Big Babol blondie, a badass who blew away bad guys while blowing giant bubblegum bubbles. Well, she might just get a chance because as well as leaving school and working in a factory, she joins a Holy Society.
Following the murder of her father when she was a young girl, in the series’ present day, she heads to Milan where she’ll carry out certain unsavoury tasks including disposing of death bodies, following the actions of the Mafia underworld, and one breathing individual about to be no more is Salvo Ferrau, aka The Dandy.
However, even after watching the first two episodes, I’m still waiting for much to happen. The trailer made this seem like it was taking all the cool elements of Atomic Blonde and transporting them to Alice’s world. Maybe there’s something I’m missing, but since we’re based in Italian Mafia territory with this, if you through the Godfather movies were slow, Bang Bang Baby makes it feel like a speedy breeze by comparison.
I thought I was getting a drama full of ’80s music. We’ve had just three tracks in the first two episodes – Echo and the Bunnymen’s The Killing Moon – at the start of the opener – and Wham’s Club Tropicana, and a small piece of Talking Heads’ Road To Nowhere.
Bang Bang Baby is based on a book, Mafia Princess. Maybe that’s more speedy? Either way, unless I hear about this being absolutely amazing, and it really ramps up several gears if I were to dive back in, I’m out.
Thanks to our friends at Prime Video for the screener prior to release.
Bang Bang Baby sees the first five episodes released on Thursday April 28th on Prime Video, and then the remaining five episodes on May 19th. It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, you can buy Mafia Princess in paperback and Kindle.
