Bingo Hell centres around the town of Oak Springs, where every business is going bust, and they all need a lift in their lives.
Enter Mr Big (Richard Brake), who has ‘BIG WINNER’ for a number plate, and brings a bit of luck into Lupita’s (Adriana Barraza) life as she subsequently finds $100 on the road by chance, leading her to head along to… put it in a donation box. Anyone else would’ve spent it with gay abandon!
However, they’re mostly a bunch of grumpy old people who don’t like that Mr Big’s Bingo Hall is opening up in their area, even if it will alleviate their fiduciary issues; and once they get in, it feels like luxurious surroundings. It’s like when everyone moaned in Springfield about Mr Burns’ Casino opening in the Simpsons episode, “$pringfield (or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)” (Season 5, Episode 10, for anyone who’s counting).
However, it takes almost 30 minutes before we get to the man introducing himself to the town, and with people are starting to win big, but in the words of another ‘Mr Big’ – The Notorious B.I.G., “Mo Money Mo Problems”, and if you fall prey to the dreams of avarice, be careful what you wish for, as it’ll lead to gore… Ooh, I’m a poet and I don’t know it!
Alas, the problem here, and for a lot of horror movies, is that we want lots of blood, lots of gore and lots of decent scares. What we DON’T want is people standing around, doing lots of inconsequential talking. Just get to the meat!
With only two gory deaths shown onscreen in nearly 90 minutes (at nearly 30 and 60 minutes, respectively), you could basically cut this down to a reasonable length of just 30 minutes if you cut out the waffle.
