Cars 3 is due out soon, and it only took until just recently for the original movie to finally be broadcast on UK TV in its original 2.35:1 widescreen aspect ratio. For years, BBC1 had the rights and they showed it in a bastardised 16:9 alternative which was partly cropped and partially reconstructed, all done by Pixar, all for idiotic channels. Thankfully, the rights have since transferred to Channel 4. That said, BBC1 have shown Cars 2 in 2.35:1, but clearly, they couldn’t be bothered to source a correct print for the first one while they had the rights.
This time round, blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage…
Two new additions to the line-up for Cars 3 are Jackson Storm (Armie Hammer) and Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo), a new Hispanic female car, McQueen’s trainer and racing technician, while the rest of the cast includes Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, Michael Wallis and Paul Dooley, with Brian Fee in the director’s chair.
Cars 3 is released in the UK on July 14th. I will not be racing to see it… *ho ho*
