Causeway – The DVDfever Review – Jennifer Lawrence – Apple TV+

Causeway centres around Lynsey (Jennifer LawrenceDon’t Look Up), a former US soldier in Afghanistan, who’s trying to adjust to life in ‘Civvy Street’, but as a result of an injury suffered in the field, she can barely dress herself and even needs help to get on and off the toilet. She comes across as almost completely incapacitated in both brain and body, but is cared for – albeit in a paid capacity – by Sharon (Jayne HoudyshellDownsizing), who does this for a living after looking after her husband who was sick almost a decade ago.

The aim is to prepare her back for reality, and to get back to normal, but while most people would want to look for a new venture, Lynsey just wants to know if she’ll get the chance to go back to her old job. Erm… why?!

Along the way, we see her going home to meet up with family, she takes a job cleaning swimming pools and takes her truck into a garage owned by James (Brian Tyree HenryBullet Train), and so on, all with Ms Lawrence wearing “no make-up” make-up for the role, to give her a purposely dowdy appearance, perhaps because she’s still trying to deal with past trauma, which I could detail, but I’ll let you discover it when it comes.

However, Causeway is just a slice of life drama where you learn about the lives of the characters – the title pinpointing where a pivotal moment takes place for the characters. And while I tried to give this film the benefit of the doubt, since it’s not uninteresting, around the halfway point, it does start to drag.

Causeway is on Apple TV+ from Friday November 4th, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD.
