Eidos’ Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? gamehas become the first UK game tosell one million copies in the UK, ChartTrack confirmed today.
The title achieved the coveted milestone in just 121 days, and has generatedan estimated £28.95 million through retail, at a time when the industrygenerally feared that the transition would make such a success storyunlikely.
The game has so far sold around 624,000 copies on PlayStation, 347,000 on PCand around 39,000 on Dreamcast, with a Game Boy version understood to behigh on the agenda for release later this year.
A sequel to the phenomenally popular franchise is also understood to havebeen given the green light by Eidos, with developers Hothouse Creationsgiven the task of coding the game. However, the bulk of the team is known tobe focussing its efforts on putting the finishing touches to a number ofinternational versions due out in the first half of 2001.
CTW also understands that various “specialist subject” versions arecurrently under consideration, which may take the form of music, sport andfilm editions. Whatever Eidos decides next, the franchise looks set tocontinue to be lucrative for all concerned.
