Effie Gray completes the trilogy first started by Howard’s End and The Remains of The Day, so it’s taken a while to get to this one, but anyhoo…
Dakota Fanning (right) plays the title role, born in Scotland, and then who married Victorian art critic and historian John Ruskin (Greg Wise) when she was 19 years old and he was 29. Shortly after they married, Effie followed John to Venice, where he was working on his book The Stones of Venice. There, John was busy studying the many historic monuments of the city, and left Effie alone. Thus Effie spent her time between the busy streets of Venice and the frequent balls.
Effie Gray is also written by Emma Thompson, and as well as her, the cast also includes Claudia Cardinale, Robbie Coltrane, Julie Walters, Tom Sturridge, Derek Jacobi, David Suchet, James Fox, Russell Tovey and his large ears. Period dramas aren’t my bag, but if it’s yours, then this is released in the UK on October 10th.
