Elly Roberts reviews
End Of The Road (A Capella)
On its first release, Grammy Winner End Of The Road, lifted from albumCooleyhighharmony, won all kinds of awards, and rightly so. It was oneof the best love ballads of the ’90s.
Going straight in at number one in the UK as their debut single in autumn 1992,it became the favourite end of night smoochie. Brothers Nathan and Wanya Morris,Shawn Stockman and Michael McCarey went on to sell millions of albums world-wide,including their recent top tenner Motown: Hitsville USA.
For the a capella version it reunites Nathan, Wanya and Shawn who are set towow crowds with their March UK tour.
As a live rendition, Im certain itll work brilliantly, but why release itas a single? It lacks the musical beauty of the original, despite the concertedefforts of the trio, which for me at least, does no justice to the mostsuccessful R&B male vocal group ever, according to sales.
If it works, dont fix it.
Elly Roberts passed away in 2011, but he was a man who was so passionate about all types of music and loved meeting his musical heroes, such as Mick Hucknall at a book signing at the Trafford Centre, Manchester in 2007.
A former teacher and also a music journalist, DJ and radio presenter on local community station Calon FM, plus appearances on BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Radio 2, Elly started doing reviews for DVDfever.co.uk in 2004 and he did the majority of the CD and concerts reviews on the website.
I know also that he loved getting away for the summer to Spain and I hope that wherever he is now he is enjoying the hot sunshine and, as one of his friends has said on his Facebook page, that he is interviewing his musical heroes.
