Eternity is where we might seemingly go once we shuffle off this mortal coil, starting with Larry (Barry Primus) carking it due to an errant pretzel at a ‘gender reveal’ party (Oh, pur-lease! Was it another “they/them”?)
Waking up on a train, as Miles Teller (The Gorge), to the destination he wasn’t expecting, he finds heaven’s waiting room is like a 1960s/70s-style airport, where everyone’s assigned an AC – Afterlife Co-ordinator, his being Anna (Da’Vine Joy Randolph – The Holdovers).
After appearing at the age when you were the happiest, thus Larry is in his mid-30s, you’re given 7 days to choose your own eternity – such as a permanent beach holiday, but just as he’s on his way, his wife, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen – Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness IMAX 3D), who’s been suffering from cancer, has also now passed away.
Eternity‘s waiting room is like one big conference hall, with tons of stalls wanting to flog endless crap to you, except there’s various different worlds, such as Beach World, Queer World, and Weimar World – “Now with 100% less Nazis!”, it proclaims. Once you’ve made your choice of final destination, you can’t change it, otherwise you’ll be thrown into the blackness of the Void.
But to throw a spanner in the works, Larry and Joan learn that her first husband, Luke (Callum Turner), who died in the Korean War, many decades ago, has been working as a barman in the waiting room building, endlessly awaiting Joan’s arrival.
Since both men want to live with her – and it’s not viable to all go to the same place together – who will she choose? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out, but it’s safe to say that Eternity is a 60-minute TV drama dragged out twice as long, and while the acting from everyone is fine, it all just feels flat for most of the time.
The cast do what they can with the script, but you’re just waiting for the film to hurry up and end.
NOTE: There are no mid, nor post-credits scenes.
Eternity is in cinemas now, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
