Film Club centres around best friends Evie (Aimee Lou Wood – Daddy Issues, Living) and Noa (Nabhaan Rizwan – The Accident), who only seem to watch one film a week, yet I can go to the cinema and quite easily watch four in a single day!
Then again, since they watch Alien on a regular basis, Evie kits out her movie room to look like the deck of the Nostromo! Similarly, she also sets up both the room AND garden, to look like the Yellow Brick Road in The Wizard Of Oz, when it’s time for that film.
However, Noa is moving away down South to work as a lawyer, soon, and it’s clear they fancy each other.
Evie feels like she lives within films, such as the aforementioned Wizard of Oz, at one point. I can understand that, given that it’s one way to escape reality, but it makes more sense than the female lawyer Noa talks to, who has never heard of the film Kramer Vs Kramer, as if he’s quoting a legal case(!)
Overall, though, Film Club is something for an occasional laugh and not much else. If there’s better options on your plate, go for them, first. It just feels like half an idea thrown together, with the age-old adage of “the course of true love never did run smooth”.
And when Evie’s mum, Suz (Suranne Jones – Frauds) goes to the pub with her friend, Steph (Lisa McGrillis – Maternal), how many standard Manchester pubs sell wine the bottle?!
Plus, when something upsets Evie, Ms Wood just sits there with a frown, protruding her teeth, as if that’s some major acting skill. We need better from comedy, even if it is BBC3.
However, it’s worth mentioning that Adolescence‘s Owen Cooper also pops up briefly in the opener.
Film Club begins Tuesday night on BBC3 at 10pm with two episodes – getting a repeat on late night BBC1, and I expect every episode will be online from day one, on BBC iPlayer.
It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but when it is, it will be listed on the New DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K releases UK page.
