Free Bert centres around comedian Bert Kreischer, playing a version of himself, who we first see performing at Rob Lowe‘s birthday party.
I was this years old when I (a) first heard of Bert Kreischer, and (b) learned that him taking his shirt off all the time is his schtick. It’s also what impresses Lowe the most.
However, generally in life, he’s “Embarrassing Dad”, dropping off his two young daughters at school when he’s basically in a T-shirt and underpants. But he’s not done there, since while guesting on a podcast with rapper T-Pain (no, me neither), Bert makes an inadvertently offensive joke about how his teen daughter, Georgia (Ava Ryan), has never given a hand job, leading to the popular girl in school, Kiersten Vanderthal (Sophia Reid-Gantzert), putting the clip on TikTok to embarrass her.
Naturally whatever Bert does in reaction, including as Kiersten’s parents are called into the school to discuss their daughter’s bullying, he still comes off worse in this.
Comedy/dramas where comedians play a version of themselves have been around for years. Aside from Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, one of the best, for me, was Louis CK’s Louie, but then he got handsy and that knackered his career.
Given that Bert has two young daughters, it feels like it’s on a par with Louie, but while that made me laugh a lot, Free Bert neither has that effect, nor makes me hate it. It’s just… there.
There’s also lots of swearing, including coming from the kids, as we strive to learn whether or not Bert can finally become an adult? Probably not. Where’s the fun in that?
Personally, though, in a world of Berts, I’ll stick with Q*Bert.
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
