Gary Lineker has smashed the long record for the tedious Ant and Dec at the National Television Awards, as Best Presenter, which they held for 23 years on the trot.
Having been forced to quit Match of the Day after 26 years, for having an opinion or three, viewers chose him over the gruesome twosome.
Gary Lineker gave thanks with the words that the prize “demonstrates that it is OK to use your platform to speak up on behalf of those who have no voice” and “It’s not lost on me why I might have won this award”.
He was asked whether he might work again for the BBC, but said, he was “really looking forward to working with ITV”.
Prior to Ant and Dec, the last other person to win the award was in 2000 for chair leg enthusiast Michael Barrymore.
