God’s Favourite Idiot is a new Netflix comedy series where you shouldn’t expect subtlety or a family viewing experience.
Slovenly tech guy Clark Thompson (Ben Falcone) gets struck down by some sort of lightning, but then things suddenly get better for him – street lights turn green at the right moment, while decent music comes on the radio, and so on. Hang on, I say “decent music”, but then his choice is Harry Styles.
Working at the same place is Amily Luck (Melissa McCarthy – Thunder Force, Nine Perfect Strangers), who rides her scooter to work (badly), and took her name from the French movie Amelie… even though she hasn’t seen it.
However, her bad parking could be put down to the fact that she has some important news to share… well, gossip, telling her other colleagues that she saw Clark, late one night at work, glowing from the inside like the Ready Brek kids (my description, throwing in an ’80s TV advert reference), but then she did “accidentally” roofie herself last night when this happened… and she drinks at work.
Since her colleagues somehow believe her over the regular order of the world, in the two episodes I’ve seen God’s Favourite Idiot doesn’t seem to have any plot direction. They made him glow, but didn’t know why or what to do with it. Similarly, he gets a visit from an angel, but they come and go, and there’s not a lot else to it. I know there’s 8 episodes in total, but if you don’t grab me from the off, don’t expect me to stick around.
Other minor plot points including how Clark pines for Amily, yet missed his chance with her a long time ago; and at one point, she states how Harry Styles has three nipples… so I looked that up. As it turns out, he has four.
Melissa McCarthy is basically the same character she always is. However, I did giggle a lot when she comments how overweight supervisor, Frisbee, “runs like a giant toddler” because he doesn’t move his arms while moving. I see people walk like that while out and about, and it’s so true!
God’s Favourite Idiot is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Netflix now.
