Headbangers: Rhythm Royale takes us down pigeon street, but not the animated TV series from 1981, which seemed to last forever, but that was the only year that new episodes were broadcast.
However, there was no competition between those characters whereas, here – as the title suggests – it’s a rhythm game, and you have to move your pigeon to the beat at the right time, jump, turn around, and so on.
There’ll be 29 other pigeons with whom to compete, with the aim of being Master Headbanger.
Personally, multiplayer isn’t really my bag, and I just want to play a single player game, but the game forces me to wait online to connect to a server, and then for other people to join in. Plus, when trying to press buttons in tune to Greig’s In the Hall of the Mountain King, I was pressing it ON the beat, but it wanted me to do it EARLIER – huh?!
I just want to play with AI people. I might stand a chance, then!
I’ve got two gameplay videos online, one from before it went live – so, it still came up with the server-finding anyway, but did connect me to AI contestants. Then again, whether real or not, I got my arse kicked both ways.
This is essentially, a series of minigames, but you generally have to just memorise where things have taken place onscreen and react accordingly.
To be fair, I can see a lot of people on Steam are enjoying Headbangers: Rhythm Royale, but it’s not really for me, and when it comes to the wait for an online game that I don’t want to play, it’s just frustrating. However, it does seem a bit odd that this is £20 to buy, when it plays like a free game, but perhaps, with paid DLC.
