Hot Milk is a drama centred around Sofia (Emma Mackey – Barbie), controlled by her domineering mother, Rose (Fiona Shaw – Echo Valley), the latter of whom is ill with mobility issues, which stop her from walking for the majority of the time, but occasionally, she can get about a little.
Taking a trip to the Spanish coast, in hope of a cure, her Doctor, Gomez (Vincent Perez – Indochine), only seems to be interested in draining her of her cash.
Along the way, in the 88 minutes before the end credits begin, Sofia also briefly meets with her Dad, Christos (Vangelis Mourikis – Chevalier), embarks on a relationship with equestrian enthusiast Ingrid (Vicky Krieps – The Girl In The Spider’s Web), but nothing much happens for most of the time, except when around halfway through, in order to make a change from everyone looking po-faced all the time, you can feel Sofia starting to snap a bit with her mum.
Alas, that soon fizzles out, and we’re left with an ambiguous ending, as if the answer will come in a sequel… but which doesn’t exist.
Hot Milk is based on a 2016 novel that must be more used as a doorstop than to be opened and read. How the hell was this deemed a coherent film? And WTF is that title all about?
Meanwhile, your time would be better served by watching a couple of other films written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, who directed this, namely She Said, and Ida.
As is typical with the case of Odeon, they had it as a preview at Trafford Centre on Monday, then aren’t bothering to show it after that! If you’re in Manchester, it is showing at their Great Northern branch. Odd when it has 12 screens, which is than Trafford Centre’s 20!
NOTE: There are no mid- or post-credits scenes.
Hot Milk is in cinemas from Friday July 4th, but isn’t yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD. However, once announced, it will appear on the New DVD Blu-ray 3D and 4K releases UK list.
Alternatively, you can buy the novel or pack of 3 doorstops.
