House of Guinness… Arthur Guinness….
Well, actually there’s a whole family of Guinnesses, but then the Bond joke wouldn’t work. I’m here all week, try the Guinness, although is this a good time to announce that it’s not my choice of tipple? Still, we might get House of Carling some day, or House of Jagerbombs, for afters 😛
Set in 1868, early on in the opener, we get “By the time of his death, Sir Benjamin Guinness had turned a Dublin brewery into a brand being poured in half the world”. There’s anger between the Irish and British, as Ireland is under British rule, but rebellion is led by the Fenians, and it goes on…
“With their father now dead, it falls to his four children to protect his legacy and fight the flames of rebellion”.
I don’t normally go for period dramas – and never got into Peaky Blinders, from the same creator, Steven Knight – but with some humour thrown in, can this one sway me?
Well, by throwing in some modern music, as I understand the aforementioned show also does – here, with Fontaine DC’s Starburster, we get lots of fighting at the funeral, the use of “Bonehead” as an insult in the 19th Century (was that ever a thing?), and James Norton (King And Conqueror) badly trying to fake an Irish accent is enough to drive me to drink!
Thanks to our friends at Netflix for the screener prior to release.
House of Guinness is on Netflix from today.
It’s not yet available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but when it is, it will be listed on the New DVD, Blu-ray, 3D and 4K releases UK page.
