It Ends With Us was the fourth film I saw on the same day, and I figured if I fell asleep during the average Blake Lively movie, it wasn’t going to be much of a loss.
She bucked the trend with the very good A Simple Favour, back in 2018, but can there be a worse movie of hers than the utterly moronic The Age Of Adaline? Well, let’s find out.
After attending her Dad’s funeral (played in flashback by Kevin McKidd – Dog Soldiers), where it’s clear she feels no love lost for him, she bumps into hunky surgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni, who also directs) and… yes, I didn’t mistype. His first name IS actually “Ryle”.
Who in the world of fuck is called Ryle?! Then again, Blake Deadly Dull’s character opens a florists and is called… Lily Bloom!
Apparently, this movie stems from a famous novel, and was NOT just written by AI, earlier this year, even though it feels like it.

Cue time for a flashback where she meets a young homeless man called Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar – 1923)… yes, if you thought “Ryle” was stupid, this guy’s called “Atlas”! And it’s the second individual on the same day where I saw a movie character with that name, the other one being in Borderlands, although his was the surname, so if they got together and morphed into one, they could be Atlas Atlas…
Then add in more nonsense, as Lily’s new shop assistant, Allysa (Jenny Slate – Everything Everywhere All At Once), just happens to be Ryle’s sister, before it’s time for him to potentially show his hand, as while the loving couple make dinner, he burns his hand on an oven dish, turns round and accidentally hits Lily in the face in the confusion.
Along with another situation, is this just how she’s remembering them, or is he really a violent psychopath?
Well, while It Ends With Us has some important things to say about domestic violence, the way it’s written and presented here gives it about as much weight to it as a Channel 5 afternoon TV movie, especially when it throws in an obvious potential love triangle. There must be far better examples of this type of story around.
There is no mid-credits or post-credits scene, although we were treated to a couple of the women in the audience clapping. In fact, the audience was made up either of women going in groups, women who’d dragged their boyfriends along, or others who have cinema subscriptions and may as well go and see every film, no matter how crap it is.
It Ends With Us is in cinemas now, and is available to pre-order on DVD, ahead of its release date TBA.
You can also buy the novel on Kindle and Paperback.
