Little Disasters is a new six-part Paramount drama, which sounds like the sort of escapade which will be gracing Channel 5’s presence soon enough. Still, it’s got to be better than The Game!
It opens with the monologue from stressed hospital nurse Liz (Jo Joyner – The Wives):
And then you look at this perfect mother, and you ask yourself… what else is she hiding?”
Cue her friend Jess (Diane Kruger – QT8: The First Eight), bringing in her baby, who’s bumped its head, apparently when she was out of the room, and has no idea what happened. As such, Liz isn’t sure whether everything is as it seems, or if it was inflicted by the mum, even though she hasn’t come across as such a person, previously.
It’s a difficult one for Liz, as only she was available when Jess brought her in, given how the department is short-staffed. Liz also feels bad for Jess, because as flashbacks show, her friend helped her out when SHE first had her own baby. So, it’s a bit of a tangled web to weave.
Add in some fourth-wall breaking as their friends – Mel (Emily Taaffe – Beast) and Charlotte (Shelley Conn – The Deceived), who are also mothers, and who met at the same antenatal class originally, are occasionally shown giving pieces-to-camera, and we’re left wondering was the child abused to the point where it has a suspected skull fracture? Well, that’s what you’ll have to find out by watching. No spoilers from me!
However, while I get that Little Disasters is highlighting an important topic, it does seem an odd one to make as the centre of drama entertainment.
Overall, though, as a drama, this does feel rather flat, but then recently, The Feud also showed that six episodes REALLY stretches the source material, and four would been much better.
Thanks to our friends at Paramount+ for the screener prior to release.
Little Disasters is not available to pre-order on Blu-ray or DVD, but is on Paramount+ from today. All episodes are available on day one.
