Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

    30 No Doubt – New

After their last album, “Tragic Kingdom”, which was already a couple of yearsold by the time “Don’t Speak” went straight to No.1, I’ve been waiting untilthe time when they brought some new music out. However, this hasn’t had anyairplay where I’ve been listening, which explains the low chart position.

26 Blondie – Nothing is Real But the Girl

“Maria” was excellent, but this follows the same pace and isn’t half asexciting. In fact, it’s rather a disappointment. Have the reformed Blondiepeaked too soon?

    16 21st Century Girls – 21st Century Girls

“The New Spice Girls” is how this band of 14-16 yr-olds have been touted, and if memory serves, ex-Spice Girls manager Simon Fuller has had a hand inthis, with newspaper stories reporting on a change in line-up as the drummerwas booted out before they signed a record deal and one of the other girlslearning how to beat them in time. Plus, a story about how the single’s releasedate was pushed back when the promo had to be re-shot due to its war theme,as if anyone could actually be offended by the theme and not the appallinglybad singing.

Anyway, it looks as if the whole project has back-fired now that it’s NOTgone straight to No.1, in fact it’s nowhere near it.

    1 Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) :O === *2nd Week at No.1*

Without a doubt this is one of the worst singles of the year so far and itshows how stupid the single-buying public can be. This is the project ofBaz Luhrmann, director of crap films such as “Strictly Ballroom” and the latestincarnation of “Romeo and Juliet”, and I fail to see what exactly he’s donehere.

He didn’t write the words, which are spoken to a dance beat, and he didn’tspeak them either, using an actor’s voice instead. I wonder if that’s actuallyhim in the video even.

Absolute crap. Save your pennies for S Club 7 next week instead 🙂

This is the 16th single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim – Praise You
  • 2. 911 – A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring – Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden – You Don’t Know Me
  • 5. Blondie – Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz – Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears – Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone – When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched – Blame It On The Weatherman
  • 10. Mr Oizo – Flat Beat
  • 11. Martine McCutcheon – Perfect Moment
  • 12. Westlife – Swear It Again
  • 13. Backpassage Boys – I Like It That Way
  • 14. Boyzone – You Needed Me
  • 15. Shanks and Bigfoot – Sweet Like Chocolate
  • 16. Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
