In the last chart of 1996, I posted my Top 50 singles of the year, picking out the Top 10 first. During 1997, I’ll be going through the list one by one. I’ve finished the Top 10, and have now moved onto the rest.
This week : 16 new entries, 2 climbers, 1 non-movers & 21 downers
It’s goodbye to :
And hello to :
(* – my current favourites)
(!!! – Single Of The Week!!!)
(:O === the current all-time hate that makes even my smilie want to hurl!)
( (R) – Repeat., ie. a re-release)
A brief analysis on the current chart situation…
16 new entries this week, 2 climbers (Chumbawamba from 7 to 6 (WHY!?!) andJanet Jackson from 9 to 8 (WHY AGAIN !?!)), 1 non-mover, and 21 going down.
Big fallers include Seahorses (from 16 to 32).
1. Spice Girls say ‘thankyou’ to their UK fansAs reported recently in some newspapers, to avoid paying millions of poundsin tax, the Spice Girls will be spending most of the next year out of thecountry, thus becoming tax exiles and only being allowed to spend 1 out ofevery 7 days in the UK, thus leaving the UK public to foot the bill.
Not so much a ‘thankyou’, but a ‘fuck you’. 🙂
2. Kylie Minogue’s new albumThe death of Diana, Princess of Wales, affected most of the world’s populationin some way, none more so than Kylie Minogue, whose album is to be put backuntil next January after having to come up with a different title to “ImpossiblePrincess”.
The album will be renamed simply, “Kylie Minogue”, just like 1988’s “KylieMinogue” and similar to 1994’s “Kylie”.
If she’s not careful, she’ll be the next Peter Gabriel.
Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…
40 Catatonia – I Am The Mob
Catatonia‘s fifth single, but only second Top 40 hit following last September’s“You’ve Got a Lot To Answer For” which made No.35.
I’ve not heard it yet, but the lead singer was in the papers recently followingWales electing themselves their own Parliament, she was asked for her opinion, which was “Yes, but who’s going to shag Sian Lloyd ?” (ITV weather girl)
37 Omar – Golden Brown :O ===
I’m sure this was released quite a while ago as I’ve heard it before (Omar’sversion I meant, not the original), but thankfully this travesty has beengiven a lowly place, and is sure to drop out next week.
The original, from the Stranglers made No.2 in January 1982, and is my secondfavourite record of all time, coming inbetween the Eagles‘ Hotel Californiain third place, and Simon and Garfunkel‘s Bridge Over Troubled Water in first.
25 Sheryl Crow – Home *
Fifth single from Sheryl’s eponymous second album, not fourth as VH1’sex-pop-star Paul King said, following If It Makes You Happy, Everyday is aWinding Road, Strong Enough, and A Change Would Do You Good.
18 Supergrass – Late in the Day *
Sadly not a big hit for this one, but Supergrass continue to deliver some ofthe best tunes around, and at least they’re releasing them a lot more oftenthan they used to.
11 Brand New Heavies – You’ve Got A Friend
Mirroring the position of their first hit with new singer Siedah Garrett,“Sometimes”, this is a cover of the famous James Taylor song which made No.4in August 1971.
However, it’s more of a slow reggae version which doesn’t seem to work, andI much prefer their last single which made No.21 before dropping out, “YouAre The Universe” which is still getting a lot of radio airplay.
10 Mansun – Closed For Business * !!!
Third single of the year for Mansun, and definitely the best by far, following“She Makes My Nose Bleed” which made No.9, and “Taxloss” whichonly made No.15.
For me, this emotional track is on a par with “Wide Open Space” whichmade No.15 almost a year ago in November 96.
7 Propellorheads and David Arnold – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service :O ===
Bond theme – dance style.
You know the name.
You know the number.
You know which record to avoid.
1 (1) Elton John – Something About The Way You Look / Candle in the Wind 1997 * *5th Week at No.1*
It was inevitable that thing song would go straight in at No.1, but now withsales well past their peak, and the Spice Girls new single released on Monday13th October, (ie. out now), chances are they’ll be knocking the song off thetop.
This is the third song in a row to go straight in at No.1 :

In this week’s Top 10, Verve retain the top slot, and there are new entriesfor Louise (The Woman in Me, 5), Janet Jackson (The Velvet Rope, 6), Suede(Sci-Fi Lullabies, 9) and Jimmy Nail (Nail File – The Best of, 10).
42. Smashing Pumpkins – 1979
They’ve been going a few years now, but I’m indifferent to a lot of theirstuff, while the occasional track does hit the right spot.
This track is one of them, and it made No.16 in February last year. The otherone I like is “Today” which made No.44 in September 93.
Their biggest hits to date though are “Tonight Tonight” (No.7, May 96)and “The End Is The Beginning Is The End” (No.10, June 97).
The end bit :
Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
