Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

61 Kraftwerk – Tour De FranceI love this track, but why is it out again now, and surely it’s a bit latefor this year?

35 Shirley Bassey/Bryn Terfel – World In Union :O ===Travesty of the week goes to these two. They deserved to be slapped down, have their microphones taken away forever more and sold off for slavery. Why?

Because they used this track for the opening of the Rugby World Cup 1999, butthat’s not because I hate rugby at the best of times, but because for such aprestigious event watched by millions of people… THEY MIMED IT !

6 Buffalo Tom:Liam Gallagher and Steve Cradock – Going Underground:CarnationObviously charting high because of its Oasis link, but the one thing I have toask is “Why?” because his track just sounds like Oasis doing the Beatles badly.

    1 Christina Aguilera – Genie in a Bottle *2nd Week at No.1*

It missed the Top 40 on its first release, but a bit of promotion works wonders. She’s American, blonde, pretty and like a new Britney Spears, but the song’sas dull as dishwater, unlike La Spears’ debut offering.

This is the 27th single to go straight in at No.1.

  • 1. Fatboy Slim – Praise You
  • 2. 911 – A Little Bit More
  • 3. Offspring – Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)
  • 4. Armand Van Helden featuring Duane Harden – You Don’t Know Me
  • 5. Blondie – Maria
  • 6. Lenny Kravitz – Fly Away
  • 7. Britney Spears – Baby One More Time
  • 8. Boyzone – When The Going Gets Tough
  • 9. B*witched – Blame It On The Weatherman
  • 10. Mr Oizo – Flat Beat
  • 11. Martine McCutcheon – Perfect Moment
  • 12. Westlife – Swear It Again
  • 13. Backpassage Boys – I Like It That Way
  • 14. Boyzone – You Needed Me
  • 15. Shanks and Bigfoot – Sweet Like Chocolate
  • 16. Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
  • 17. S Club 7 – Bring It All Back

    43. Roachford: Naked (Without You)

Of two singles released last year, this was the one that missed the Top 40,naking only No.53 in July 98, despite it being an atmospheric and powerfulballad. It followed “How Could I? (Insecurity)”, which made No.34 in Feb 98.

Well, that’s it for now. If you want to be added to the WidescreenVideo and Laserdisc lists, just mail me atCharts Request to tell me.
