Of this week’s highlights and lowlights…

Love Actually:
Original Soundtrack

26 Billy Mack – Christmas is All Around…aka actor Bill Nighy from the movie “Love Actually”, in a cover of”Love is All Around”, and not a very good one but it’s for Comic Relief orChildren in Need, or something.

Blue: Guilty

11 Blue – Signed Sealed DeliveredIt says “featuring Stevie Wonder”, but it sounds more like he and a womanare singing all the vocals (which is true) and Blue are doing very littleindeed (which is also true)

Sugababes: Three

10 Sugababes – Too Lost In You *Surprisingly, this is a brilliant single and by far their best thing todate. Perhaps they’re finally making the grade from cheesy pop artists tomore serious artists?

Pop Idol:
Living The Dream

5 The Idols – Happy Xmas (War is Over)Dreadfully trite, and it was such a fix that Michelle won Pop Idol 2, butthen Mark was incredibly dull and she was just… a bad karaoke singer.

There was a request for people to write in to be on Pop Idol 3 in 18 monthstime, at the end of the show, except will there be another one? I can’t seeit coming back. Maybe they thought they could turn things around with ‘sequelseries’ such as this and “The Rivals” but while the series get massive ratingsand a fair bit in phone revenue, I doubt that pays for the production andpromotion of intending to get a new star to have a long-term music career, especially since the decreasing credibility of the show will put the nail intheir career coffin early on, however good their intentions are, and I doubtSimon Cowell and Simon Fuller are a charity.

Bo Selecta:
Series 2

4 Bo Selecta – Proper CrimboLeigh Francis’ Avid Merrion creation has been going for far more years thanis good for it. However, this (hopefully) last throw of the dice is worth awatch of the video if mainly for the pairing onscreen of Matthew Wright andJohn Leslie.

The Darkness:
Permission To Land

2 The Darkness – Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End)OTT, but reasonably enjoyable as seasonal nonsense.

Gary Jules:
Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets

1 Michael Andrews & Gary Jules – Mad World *1st Week at No.1*

The surprise Xmas hit, and taken from the soundtrack of 2001’s sleepermovie success, Donnie Darko

This is a cover of the Tears For Fears single, and excellently haunting it istoo. Glad to see it came to the fore after being picked up on by radio stationsplaying it rather than the likes of Pop Idol force-feeding their tripe downour throats.
